Since I arrived in Spain it is something that has surprised me enormously, something that is repeated year after year at this time of year.
Desde que llegué a España es algo que me ha sorprendido enormemente, algo que se repite año a año por estas fechas.
En mi país natal, Argentina, si bien estas fechas de pascua se viven de una manera y con cierta tradición, por supuesto no todas las personas, pero muchas de ellas siguen esas costumbres habituales de esta semana en especial, al llegar aquí y ver, presenciar y vivir la primera semana santa, me llene de sorpresa e impacto.
Nunca había visto nada igual, desde los preparativos en las calles con mucho tiempo de antelación, reuniones, prácticas varias, todo me parecía algo de otro mundo.
En la ciudad y supongo que en todo el país hay varias bandas que practican con sus instrumentos diferentes marchas, músicas, canciones, según a la agrupación a la que pertenezcan y esto lo hacen con meses de anticipación. Se los puede escuchar en algún club de vecinos, por ejemplo, cuando uno pasa por la calle.
Pero no sólo eso, sino que los preparativos para esta semana en las calles también se ven varios días antes y no son pocas las decoraciones en casi toda la ciudad. Son cosas que jamás había visto. Cuando era muy niña mi abuela me llevaba a esas procesiones, pero ya de adulta no lo hice más, pero recuerdo que no tenían ni punto de comparación con lo que he visto aquí.
In my native country, Argentina, although these Easter holidays are lived in a certain way and with a certain tradition, of course not all people, but many of them follow the usual customs of this special week, when I arrived here and saw, witnessed and lived the first Holy Week, I was filled with surprise and impact.
I had never seen anything like it, from the preparations in the streets a long time in advance, meetings, various practices, everything seemed like something from another world.
In the city, and I suppose all over the country, there are several bands that practice different marches, music and songs with their instruments, depending on the group they belong to, and they do this months in advance. You can hear them in a neighbourhood club, for example, when you walk down the street.
But not only that, but the preparations for this week in the streets can also be seen several days beforehand and there are decorations all over the city. These are things I have never seen before. When I was a child my grandmother used to take me to these processions, but as an adult I didn't do it anymore, but I remember that they didn't even compare with what I have seen here.

Es realmente tradición y un estilo de vida para la mayoría de la población. Recuerdo que la única que presencie fue en el año 2019 y como era algo novedoso para mi y mi familia fuimos a ver de que se trataba. Realmente impactante, como cada agrupación cuenta con estatuas gigantes llamadas tronos, enormes y extremadamente pesadas que varias personas cargan a cuesta de sus hombros por un trayecto enorme. Y he podido presenciar como para toda la gente es una forma de vida, que esperan en esos días.
Por otra parte, cientos de turistas llegan a la ciudad para ver este evento, que según comentan este año no tuvo precedentes. Todos se agolpan en las calles para ver pasar a las bandas tocando y los tronos. Les aseguro que esto llamó mi atención poderosamente estando aquí. Pero reconozco que para todos es ya un estilo de vida.
It really is tradition and a way of life for most of the population. I remember the only one I witnessed was in 2019 and as it was something new for me and my family we went to see what it was all about. Really impressive, as each group has giant statues called thrones, huge and extremely heavy that several people carry on their shoulders for a huge distance. And I have been able to witness how for all the people it is a way of life, which they look forward to during those days.
On the other hand, hundreds of tourists come to the city to see this event, which is said to be unprecedented this year. Everyone crowds into the streets to see the bands playing and the thrones passing by. I can assure you that this attracted my attention powerfully when I was here. But I recognise that for everyone it is already a way of life.

No he ido a procesiones, pero si a recorrer las calles de la ciudad y este año me parecieron aún más adornadas sobre todo los balcones de los edificios y no sólo del centro histórico sino en diferentes puntos de la ciudad he visto lo mismo. Gente agolpada en los distintos puntos de la ciudad donde hay iglesias, cofradías y hermandades., pero en general la ciudad estaba llena de gente, como les digo, muchos turistas que vienen a ver este evento. Incluso colocan tribunas en el centro de la ciudad donde la gente paga por tener su asiento allí y los balcones del centro histórico se alquilan especialmente para que la gente pueda ver las procesiones pasar.
Recorrí varios puntos de la ciudad, sobre todo del centro como tanta otra gente estos días y apreciar el clima que se vivía, los preparativos. El año pasado es algo que no se pudo hacer ya que la lluvia impidió que las esculturas, los tronos pudiera ser sacados de sus lugares y muchas procesiones fueron suspendidas. Pero este año el clima fue mucho mejor, aunque hubo amenazas de lluvias que no se concretaron o por lo menos no en esos momentos.
I have not been to processions, but I have been to walk the streets of the city and this year they seemed to me even more decorated, especially the balconies of the buildings and not only in the historic centre but in different parts of the city I have seen the same thing. People crowded in the different parts of the city where there are churches, brotherhoods and fraternities, but in general the city was full of people, as I say, many tourists who come to see this event. They even set up grandstands in the city centre where people pay to have their seat there and the balconies in the historic centre are specially rented out so that people can watch the processions go by.
I walked through various parts of the city, especially the city centre like so many other people these days, and I could appreciate the atmosphere and the preparations. Last year it was something that could not be done because the rain prevented the sculptures, the thrones from being taken out of their places and many processions were suspended. But this year the weather was much better, although there were threats of rain which did not materialise or at least not at that time.

Cuanto más me acercaba a la calle Larios, la calle más emblemática y en las cercanías de los castillos fue cuanta más gente vi y más decoraciones en los balcones. Y toda la zona que circunda a la catedral estaba llena de carteles y afiches sobre las figuras más emblemáticas de la ciudad como Jesús Cautivo.
He sentido que aquí la semana santa se vive por parte de la gente de una manera intensa, me refiero a los habitantes, a los malagueños, se vive con pasión, sentimiento, emoción y eso se puede palpar en las calles. Para los turistas es un gran e importante evento digno de ser visto no solamente desde las calles sino desde los balcones donde la vista en la altura cambia totalmente la perspectiva.
The closer I got to Calle Larios, the most emblematic street and in the vicinity of the castles, the more people I saw and the more decorations on the balconies. And the whole area around the cathedral was full of posters about the most emblematic figures of the city such as Jesus Cautivo.
I have felt that the people here live Holy Week in an intense way, I mean the inhabitants, the people of Malaga, they live it with passion, feeling, emotion and this can be felt in the streets. For tourists it is a great and important event worthy of being seen not only from the streets but also from the balconies where the view from the heights changes the perspective completely.
