Lately, I’ve been playing more Modern format again, and honestly… I missed this little guy. This blog is a tribute—no, a full-on love letter—to one of the most useful Rebellion Soulbound unit: the Halfling Refugee.
Right off the bat:
Yes. That 1-mana neutral unit with Heal, Weary, and a chunky 8 Health.
I’ve used this card a lot, and I mean A LOT. So much so that I started digging into the stats out of curiosity. Turns out —Halfling Refugee is in my top 5 most played cards, even when compared to Chaos Legion cards that have been around way longer!

Every single one of these recent battles? Halfling Refugee made the cut. And that’s not just cherry-picked—there are dozens more like this in my log.
Why Is Halfling Refugee So Good?
Let’s break it down:
-
Only 1 Mana!
This is huge. It fits into literally any team comp. especially with low mana cap battles, the Halfling can always squeeze in. -
Self-Heal + 8 Health = Value
A self-healing 1-cost card with 8 health? That’s already good. It soaks up sneak attacks, distracts opportunity monsters, and sometimes even outlives your tanks. -
It’s Neutral
This is maybe my favorite part. I can play Halfling Refugee with any element. Water, Fire, Death—you name it. It’s such a plug-and-play unit.
But What About Weary?
Let’s talk about the one downside:
Weary: At the beginning of round 1, Weary units have a 10% chance to become Exhausted. This chance increases by 10% every round, up to a max of 80%. Exhausted units skip their turn and cannot retaliate.
Sounds harsh, right?
But in practice? It rarely matters. I’ve maybe lost a handful of matches because of Weary, but the upside of running Halfling Refugee far outweighs the risk. And honestly, if you're relying on your 1-mana unit to carry your entire lineup... you've already lost.
Stats Don't Lie 💥
When I filtered my battle stats to only show cards with at least 500 battles, the Halfling Refugee came out as my #1 best performing unit. That's better than many of my maxed Chaos Legion monsters, that have been monitored for a longer period of time.
Here are my specific stats for this unit:
Today’s Battles – Proof in the Pudding
This morning, I played five Modern battles. Guess who showed up in four out of five?
Yep. My little buddy.
And the results?
4 Wins. 1 Loss.

Match 1 Summary:
In this match, the Halfling Refugee only got Exhausted once, but still managed to absorb a really important hit that helped shift the momentum. On my side, I did take a bit of a risk—bringing a unit with Burning that really should’ve been cleansed. The fire spread way too quickly across my team, which could’ve cost me the match… but thankfully, it didn’t.
A scrappy win, but a win nonetheless.
Match 2 Summary:
In this one, my opponent took a big risk by running an Electrified unit—which deals 1 damage to all their own units every turn. That’s always a gamble, especially in longer fights (which was not the case in this match). My Halfling Refugee stepped up with a massive 7 melee damage hit (thanks to some buffs), which was honestly a game-changing blow. If it had gotten Exhausted, that would’ve been painful… but nope—it stayed active,
Another clean win.
Match 3 Summary:
In this match, my Halfling Refugee got Exhausted right in round one—worst-case scenario, right? But even then, it survived the entire battle and helped secure the win. That’s the beauty of this unit: even when its one downside triggers immediately, it still brings value just by soaking hits and staying alive.
And remember—these are just 3 out of the ~650 wins this little healer has helped me earn. 🤣
Absolute legend.
Final Thoughts
So here’s my Ode to the Halfling Refugee:
A 1-mana warrior with heal in its bones,
From Bronze to Diamond, it gets things done.
If you're ignoring the Halfling in your lineups, maybe it’s time to give it another look. It's one of those quiet MVPs that wins games without asking for attention.
I’ll see you on the battlefield! 🧙♂️⚔️
