So, I just found out that besides today being a public holiday (due to the Muslim festivities), today also marks the beginning of the mid-term break for kids in school. This is the middle of the term, and it always marks a break that children can use to relax and enjoy. Kind of like a mini-holiday where they can just throw back and do nothing that has to do with school.
And get this, it’s for an entire week. So, their holiday started on Friday, and by the time they return to school, they will have been home for about ten days. If you compare it to our time, that’s close to the number of days we had in regular holidays back in the day. As in ehn… students these days really have it better.
I don’t even know when exactly the midterm break became a one-week holiday. During my time, it was only for two days. It started on Thursday and ended on Friday. This was always a period of time that we looked forward to because it is usually a season where there are not many holidays. Third terms are easily the longest terms with the least amount of holidays. At least that’s how I remember it.
And back then, Muslim celebrations, like the just-concluded one, sometimes came on the same days that we had breaks. I remember a period where the mid-term break overlapped with the festivities. They didn’t join it though, instead we got extra holidays. We were given Thursday and Friday off for the festivities, and then given the next Monday and Tuesday off for midterm. Other times, the midterm break started on Tuesday, so that by Thursday and Friday, we were observing the festive holiday.
What am I saying? Back in the day, even on the best days when there were many holidays, the most we got was four days. And at least, we went to school for one day a week. And this was always frustrating, because you would never feel like you’d enjoyed the holiday enough for you to return to school. Having four days of holiday as a child is just crazy. It’s long enough to be considered a holiday, but not too long for the kids to enjoy the holiday spirit. Because before you can blink, it’s all over and you’re back to school.
But this is 2025, and things are very different. Kids will be home for a solid ten days, back-to-back, and it’s beautiful! A full week at home, without having to think of school. Now, that’s what I call a holiday. The people who will enjoy this with them are teachers and other professionals who work in schools. But for everyone else, their holiday ends after today. From tomorrow, they return to work.
Well, I feel this is a good move on the part of the Ministry of Education. I would have liked it very much if it had been implemented during my time. But I survived. And I’m here writing about it, lol! And I just hope that with time, more policies will be made that will have kids benefitting even more from them.
Have a great week, everyone!
