Fellow Hiver and LeoFinancer - let me walk you through one of the best visualization techniques that I've ever come across. It's something that many people don't understand. Quite a lot of people have tried to achieve greatness in life.

Many fall short. We have a lot of regrets in life as we age. We regret not working harder. We regret not living better. We regret not reading more. We regret not writing more.

How do we avoid regret? How do we shove it aside and live a great life that is filled with joy and accomplishment?

Who Do You Want to Be in 10 Years?

This question has changed my life. I heard it in a Matthew McConaughey speech at the oscars a few years back:

He said he looks up to 3 (or maybe 4) people. The important part was the last one.

The last person he looks up to is who he chases. And who does he chase? He chases himself. Not himself today. He chases himself in 10 years.

He says the only true inspiration in life - the only person we can truly chase - is the person we become in 10 years. That means that every 10 years, you chase the next 10 year version of yourself. When you live life on these terms, you're always chasing. Always looking forward to that next thing.

You're always working hard to build the life that you want to build and not looking backwards but forwards.

So ask yourself: who are you chasing? What do you look like in 10 years?

For me, this encapsulates a lot of different things. It can be helpful to break them up into different areas. Who are you in terms of:

  • Health
  • Wealth
  • Relationships

These are 3 core aspects of my life that I'm always aiming to improve and push forward on.

I am excitedly moving toward a vision of who I am in 10 years. The most fit, healthy version of myself who is actively doing fun and healthy activites on a daily basis including outdoor activities.

From the wealth POV - yes, I want to be wealthy but wealth is not just being rich. It's being free to pursue the things that I love to pursue.

Relationships - I want to have amazing relationships. Friendships, family, Significant other... I want them all to be in a much healthier place than they are today!

So now follow my lead: where do you want to be in 10 years? Who are you chasing?
