Let me take you to a hidden gem in northern Cebu — St. Benedict’s Monastery, Our Lady of Manaoag Rosary Center, located in Barangay Corte, Carmen. This place is more than just a quiet escape — it’s a spiritual haven. Devotion to Our Lady of Manaoag is widely known in Northern Luzon, and now she has also found a home in the heart of Carmen. Many visitors share stories of answered prayers, healing experiences, and a renewed sense of peace after visiting.

Did You Know Where the Name "Manaoag" Came From?
According to tradition, the name Manaoag comes from the Pangasinense word "mantaoag," which means "to call." The story goes back to the early 1600s when a farmer, on his way home, heard a mysterious voice calling him. When he looked around, he saw the image of the Virgin Mary on top of a tree covered in clouds. She was holding a rosary in one hand and the Child Jesus in the other, glowing in heavenly light. Mary told the farmer where she wanted a church to be built. So, a small chapel was made on that exact hilltop — and that later became the center of what is now the town of Manaoag.

The image of Our Lady of Manaoag is actually a 17th-century ivory statue of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus. It was brought from Spain to the Philippines by a priest named Juan de San Jacinto, through the Manila galleon trade in the early 1600s. You’ll find similar images of Our Lady of the Rosary in other countries, but the Manaoag statue is unique — especially its crown and clothes, which reflect Filipino culture and devotion. There is also a pilgrim replica of the statue that travels to different churches around the Philippines so more people can pray and venerate her.

A huge pilgrim replica of Señor Santo Niño can also be found here! Just like the original image in Cebu, this replica draws visitors and devotees who come to offer prayers and light candles. It adds even more meaning to the experience—reminding us of the deep devotion Filipinos have for the Child Jesus. Whether you’re here for Mama Mary or the Santo Niño, this sacred place truly feels like a spiritual home.

How to Get There?
⚪️ From Cebu City to Carmen, it’s about 41 kilometers away.
⚪️ You can ride a minibus from Sun Gold (in front of SM Cebu) or in North Bus for around ₱60–₱70.
⚪️ Once you reach Carmen, the road to Barangay Corte is about 5 kilometers.
You can take a habal-habal (motorcycle for hire) for ₱30–₱35 per person (I just don't if this is exactly the fare for every habal-habal because we had a private vehicle during our visit).
⚪️ (Take note: riding with three people on one motorcycle isn't the safest option. SAFETY FIRST ALWAYS!)
