Good evening Hivers friends and welcome back to my Blog.
In Italy there is a cave that has won the Guinness Book of Records because it contains the largest room in the world dug into the rock! I’m talking about the Grotta Gigante (Giant Cave), located in the province of Trieste (north-east).
A cave 114 meters high, 280 meters long and 76 meters wide. Fortunately, this jewel can be visited and has become a very important tourist and educational attraction.

In Italia esiste una grotta che ha vinto il Guinness dei primati perché contiene la sala più grande al mondo scavata nella roccia! Sto parlando della Grotta Gigante, situata nella provincia di Trieste (nord-est).
Una caverna alta 114 metri, lunga 280 metri e larga 76 metri. Fortunatamente, questo gioiello si può visitare ed è diventata un’attrazione turistica e didattica molto importante.
The origin of the Grotta Gigante dates back to about ten million years ago. It’s a cavity present on the Carso plateau, a few km from the border with Slovenia. Here there are limestone and dolomitic rocks.
This natural spectacle is continuously studied by geologists because we can find sediments with shells of dead organisms such as corals and crustaceans. Furthermore, over the centuries real galleries have formed that are fascinating for their complexity!
The guided tour of the Grotta Gigante lasts about an hour and goes up to 101 meters below the surface! The structure also houses the interesting Scientific Museum of Speleology.
L’origine della Grotta Gigante risale ad una decina di milioni di anni fa. Si tratta di una cavità presente sull’altipiano del Carso, a pochi km dal confine con la Slovenia. Qui sono presenti rocce di tipo calcareo e dolomitico.
Questo spettacolo naturale è continuamente studiato dai geologi perché possiamo trovare sedimenti con conchiglie di organismi morti come coralli e crostacei. Inoltre, nel corso dei secoli si sono formate delle vere e proprie gallerie che sono affascinanti per la loro complessità!
La visita guidata della Grotta Gigante dura circa un’ora e si arriva fino a 101 metri sotto la superficie! La struttura ospita anche l’interessante Museo Scientifico della Speleologia.
Some archaeological evidence tells us that during the Neolithic the Cave was very frequented by humans. For many centuries, however, no one heard of it anymore.
Only in 1840 did the actual exploration of the Grotta Gigante begin. In fact, in those years there was a major water problem in the city of Trieste, and the scientists of the time thought of descending into the Cave to look for a source of water.
The one who descended was Anton Frederick Lindner, who unfortunately did not find what he was looking for.
The tourist route as we know it today, however, was born in 1905.
Alcune testimonianze archeologiche ci raccontano come durante il Neolitico la Grotta era molto frequentata dagli esseri umani. Per molti secoli, invece, non se ne sentì più parlare.
Solo nel 1840 iniziò l’esplorazione vera e propria della Grotta Gigante. Infatti, in quegli anni era presente un grosso problema idrico nella città di Trieste, e gli studiosi dell’epoca pensarono di calarsi all’interno della Grotta per cercare una fonte d’acqua.
A calarsi fu Anton Frederick Lindner, che sfortunatamente non trovò quello che stava cercando.
Il percorso turistico come lo intendiamo oggi, invece, è nato nel 1905.
