Wednesday! My day off! This is the one day I get to do whatever I want without feeling guilty. Ever since my cousin came to Kaduna, we made it compulsory to go strolling after dinner (mostly) and that would be one of the best decisions I made this year. We leave our phones behind and we just walk and talk. Exchanging stories and life lessons and connecting with nature around us.
For example, Helen. This goat right here, I call her Helen. I have a special bond with Helen. When I pass by, I always go with a stalk of grass for her and she happily takes it from me. So, when she sees me coming, she stands ready. My cousin finds our relationship weird. But one day, when she saw how Helen walked to the edge of her station to say Hi to me (and collect a bribe stalk), she wanted to build her own “weird” relationship. She named her own goat Johnbosco.
Another is Percy. Well, I do not know if it is the same Pidgeon but we always find it here. Every morning when we go for the mandatory walk in search of breakfast. I was trying to go after Percy here (as I named it) and it tried to fly away when it noticed my persistence. It did fly away but not before I caught that.
Now… we have these three! I hadn’t seen them in forever when I caught them waddling in the middle of the road. Seems like I wasn’t the only one who hadn’t because they turned heads. Some took out their phones to catch their march past. Are ducks that scarce now? Even the vehicles made way for them. My cousin remarked that it was like watching celebrities on the street. I got a giddy feeling from watching them.
We always enter the Sabo market to get ingredients. This is always our first walk of the day. Other than the days I have classes, me and my cousin would go to the market to get ingredients for dinner once the sun begins to set. During this time, the market isn’t as busy but it is full.
We do get some complementary milk to fight against the heat. It is delicious. Vanilla flavoured and frozen, it is a 'suckable' delight.
Today is my cousin’s birthday! She is a great clothes designer and a dedicated art master. Her clothes always carry a twist and once she gets a form of inspiration, she is locked on until she creates it. We are always mistaken for twins when we go out. Once, people have pointed out that she looks more like my mom than I do. My cousin, of course, is thrilled. In her words, she always wanted a twin and would have it no other way.
To end this post, I would always go up my neighbours porch to take a picture of the setting sun…
…and I was fortunate to catch this sunset on our way back from the market in a bus. We went to the Central market to buy something and I came across this wonderful sight.
Thank you to @tattoodjay for running this weekly activity. A walk a day keeps depression away. It is always bliss after our walk, it's exercise and helps keep the mind focused.
