Hoy les quiero contar un poco de una nueva aventura que tuve en el mundo del arte, y es que me aventuré a pintar mi primera franela. Muchos piensan que pintar es igual en cualquier superficie y utilizando diferentes materiales, que tienen los mismos fundamentos y funciona de la misma forma, pero la verdad es que para cada tipo de superficie hay un tipo de pintura y que al aplicarla tiene sus técnicas, sus trucos, para que queden bien.
Yo desde hace aaaños tenía la curiosidad de pintar sobre tela (más o menos desde que estaba en la universidad, unos 13 años atrás), pero no había tenido los recursos para comprar las pinturas especiales para hacerlo. Cuando comencé a dar clases en mi local fui tomando parte de las ganancias para comprar poco a poco la pintura de tela.
Comencé con el color negro, y luego fui incorporando otros colores básicos como el blanco, los primarios, y otros secundarios. Al tener una buena gama decidí aventurarme, quería pintar una franela.
Se acercaba la galería que estaba organizando y se me ocurrió la idea de pintar una franela con el motivo que íbamos a exponer ese día. La temática era retro yo quería hacer un diseño relacionado a esto, y lo primero que quise hacer fueron las letras.
En este primer post, les mostraré como fue el proceso, ese primer encuentro con las pinturas y la técnica de pintar tela.
Today I want to tell you a little bit about a new adventure I had in the art world, and that is that I ventured to paint my first flannel. Many think that painting is the same on any surface and using different materials, which have the same fundamentals and works the same way, but the truth is that for each type of surface there is a type of paint and that when applying it has its techniques, its tricks, to get it right.
I have been curious about painting on canvas for years (more or less since I was in college, about 13 years ago), but I had not had the resources to buy the special paints to do it. When I started to teach at my place I took part of the profits to buy little by little the fabric paint.
I started with black, and then I incorporated other basic colors such as white, primaries, and other secondary colors. When I had a good range I decided to take the plunge, I wanted to paint a flannel.
The gallery I was organizing was approaching and I came up with the idea of painting a flannel with the motif we were going to exhibit that day. The theme was retro and I wanted to make a design related to this, and the first thing I wanted to do were the letters.
In this first post, I will show you how the process went, that first encounter with the paints and the technique of painting fabric.
La franela que compré era de color negro, al igual que mi uniforme actual. Escogí ese color porque me pareció que agregándole detalles de color tendría un buen contraste y sería llamativo.
Lo primero que hice fue trazar con un creyón blanco las letras que previamente hice en una hoja blanca y que luego repliqué en la franela.
The flannel I bought was black, just like my current uniform. I chose that color because I thought that adding colored details would give it a good contrast and would be eye-catching.
The first thing I did was to trace with a white crayon the letters that I had previously made on a white sheet of paper and then replicated on the flannel.
Una vez tuve todo trazado comencé a delinear los bordes con la pintura blanca. Ya había visto videos en los que indicaban que para trabajar superficies oscuras había que aplicar una capa de pintura blanca.
Así que delineé las letras para poder verlas mejor y saber cual era el límite que debía respetar.
Once I had everything traced I started to outline the edges with the white paint. I had already seen videos in which they indicated that to work on dark surfaces it was necessary to apply a layer of white paint.
So I outlined the letters to be able to see them better and to know which was the limit I had to respect.
Luego fui rellenándolas, acá comenzó la aventura pues debía ir como aplacando con el mismo pincel las "pelusitas" de la tela. La franela es de algodón y pues no era completamente lisa.
Así apliqué la capa de pintura que en el momento me pareció algo clara y pensé en aplicar una segunda para que no se vieran las zonas oscuras y el color que le colocara después se viera parejo.
Then I was filling them in, here the adventure began because I had to use the same brush to flatten the “little hairs” of the fabric. The flannel is made of cotton and it was not completely smooth.
So I applied the layer of paint that at the time seemed a little light and I thought of applying a second one so that the dark areas would not be seen and the color that I would apply later would look even.
Cuando la pintura se secó se hizo mucho más transparente y yo quedé 😨. Acá me di cuenta que solo dos capas no serían suficiente para lograr el resultado ideal.
Fui aplicando una segunda capa de pintura.
When the paint dried it became much more transparent and I was 😨. Here I realized that only two coats would not be enough to achieve the ideal result.
I applied a second coat of paint.
Cuando iba por la tercera capa de blanco ya me decidí a no colocarle más, quería colocarle color. Cabe destacar que en este proceso demoré varios días, pues en mis tiempos libres iba pintando poco a poco.
No sabía que color colocarle a las letras y fue entonces cuando se me ocurrió hacer un degradado con turquesa y lila.
El proceso fue muy diferente a lo que esperaba y dudaba si iba a quedar bien y si realmente se notaría el degradado. Por suerte al secar noté que si había funcionado y logré hacerlo.
La razón por la que dudé es por la consistencia de las pinturas. Por suerte iba entendiendo bien como funcionaba.

When I was on the third coat of white I decided not to put any more, I wanted to put color. It should be noted that this process took me several days, because in my free time I was painting little by little.
I did not know what color to put on the letters and it was then when it occurred to me to make a gradient with turquoise and lilac.
The process was very different from what I expected and I doubted if it was going to look good and if the gradient would be really noticeable. Luckily when it dried I noticed that it had worked and I managed to do it.
The reason why I doubted is because of the consistency of the paints. Luckily I was getting a good understanding of how it worked.
So far I will leave this first part of the adventure, in a next post I will tell you more about this process. ♥
