These boats don't go fast! it was a gentle float in an easterly direction towards the mighty Rhine. Next stop Köln, the fourth most populous city in the Fatherland.

The Prins Claus bridge in Utrecht, connects the two suburbs of Utrecht, and was opened in 2003. The architect was also responsible for another masterpiece of design, the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, many a night I have sat drinking copious amounts of beer on expenses just admiring that structure. This one, not as grand and no beer on expenses!

The Prinses Irene Locks, are a pair of locks on the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal where the canal meets the river Lek. The canal is reported to be the busiest in the world, linking the Port of Amsterdam with the mighty Ruhr river

dam19.jpeg

The Locks are in the region of Wijk bij Duurstede, Netherlands, 20 miles from the German border. the first was constructed in 1952, and the Eastern one through which we are headed was built in 1974,

Between them the locks transfer approximately 24k vessels annually.

The eastern lock chamber is just over 850 ft in length and meters long and 80 feet wide,

Amazing engineering, from the lowlands of the Netherlands we have risen to continue towards Cologne. The next port of call on the Grand European Tour.
