Hello, friends, travellers, and community greetings! I am continuing our short visit to Mascut. Today little bit about Mutrah Fort. When we asked the hotel reception about nearby attractions, they didn’t mention Mutrah Fort. However, after exploring Mutrah Souq and wandering around the area,

We spotted a tall tower illuminated on the hill. We asked some people nearby, and they informed us that it was the famous Mutrah Fort. Eager to see as many places as possible, we decided to visit it.

As we approached the fort, it was around 8 pm. there was an entry ticket to purchase if visitors wanted to go inside the fort first I was thinking to come back the next day early but when we went to the ticket office the manager said it was the best time at cooled evening the day time temparature are very hot,you might not able to go half way. before buying the tickets I wanted to look how much to climb? .
I worried about my back problem and whether I could climb it. We got close to the stairs, and a young couple was descending. I asked them if the climb was difficult. The fat young man replied, Oh my God, it took all my energy! I felt scared, but my husband encouraged me, saying, Just try it, you can do it. Take it easy and go slowly.

The history is written on the copper board at the main entrance door.

As soon as I climbed 50 stairs, I forgot my pain and fatigue upon seeing the beauty of the town. From the hill overlooking the natural harbor of Mutrah, the evening view of the town, lit up, was breathtaking, and the cool night atmosphere was refreshing. Climbing the fort at night was a good decision; during the day, it gets extremely hot and view might very reflect because of white houses.

Mutrah Fort, situated on the hills overlooking the natural harbor of Mutrah, is a historic site in Muscat. It served as a strategic defense point against attacks and as a vantage point to monitor the surrounding area from its watchtowers.

The construction of the fort dates back to 1507 AD. It was later reinforced with stronger walls and towers by the Portuguese during their occupation of Oman in the 1500s. Mutrah Fort has remained a crucial defensive location for centuries, including in modern times.

The geological formation of the ophiolite rock hills was strategically utilized in its design. Omani architects employed thicker stone walls for added stability, which were finished with sarooj (Sarooj is a traditional water-resistant mortar used in Iranian architecture), a durable plaster made from a mixture of loam, sand, and lime. This was intended to provide a vantage point for monitoring potential invasions.

Visitors can admire the old cannons scattered on the ramparts and the slightly more modern WWII-era artillery guns.

Although the fort does not have internal rooms or seating areas, it extends along the hill, meaning a visit won't take much time. However, we did notice there is a café and a play area.

The panoramic view of Mutrah Corniche is an unforgettable sight. Forts dating back to the 16th century guard the coast of old Muscat, showcasing the architectural and traditional history of the Sultanate of Oman. Today, these forts stand tall, reflecting their rich heritage and welcoming visitors. Some of them are open only to significant delegates from around the globe.

The location offers multiple vantage points overlooking the Mutrah Corniche, the harbor, and the rocky ophiolite outcrops, making it a popular destination for both tourists and locals.
It didn't take long to walk around. We started at 8 pm and came out around 9 pm. For me, it is physically hard, but it is worth climbing to the top and experiencing the beauty of Muscut at night.
