I started this series, and I know it took me a long time to publish the second post, but I'm still looking for a game, and I actually wanted to share it with you. I found some information about the game, but I don't think it's possible to play it today. Anyway, Space Impact, or Retro Space as it is now called, was one of the most enjoyable games I played as a child.
I don’t think this game was as popular as Age of War. Still, you can mention which games you played in the comments. I remember playing this game on Nokia 3310 phones. Playing this game took me back to those days. When I was 5 or 6 years old, I used to beg my mom to let me play games on her phone.
As for how the game is played, it’s a spaceship game where you defeat your opponents in space and complete levels. At the end of each level, there’s a final boss. All these bosses are very different from each other. Your spaceship fires automatically; all you have to do is kill the creatures coming at you and avoid their attacks.
The final bosses of the first levels won't be too challenging. Because you have a lot of special powers, and you can easily win by using them. You can see your score in the top right corner. On the top left, you can see how many lives you have left. Next to that, you'll see what your special power is and how many uses you have left. I have 10 special powers. If I press the button in the bottom right, I'll use one of them.
As you progress through the levels, you’ll encounter very powerful creatures before the final bosses. I actually think the original game was longer than this because it took me about 30 minutes to finish this game. Yes, I didn’t die at all, but I still remember it being longer. Maybe it felt longer because I died so much as a kid, lol.
Here are some other final bosses you'll encounter in the game. Aren't these designed much better than what I remember? Remember, this game was made around 2003 for a phone. Back then, there were no smartphones. Some of them still look cool. My favorites are the one that looks like a skull and the one that looks like a snake.
And this is the final boss in the game. This boss is really powerful and hard to defeat. You need good dodging skills, and you can only deal damage by aiming at its eyes. It’s not easy because it keeps firing missiles at you. Maybe I should have saved most of my special attacks for this one. I was too generous with them at the beginning.
If you're thinking of playing the game, I'd like to give you some tips. If you focus on dodging your opponents' attacks instead of killing them, you'll find everything much easier. Collect the orbs they leave behind when you kill them. These will grant you special powers. Use them primarily for the final bosses, but don’t hesitate to use them if you’re in a tough spot, as you can accumulate a lot of them throughout the levels. I had 22 special powers, which was more than enough to defeat all the final bosses.
Finally, if you don't want to play the game in black and white like in the old days, there's also a color version. Plus, you can switch between these modes within the game. My eyes couldn't adjust to the color version, so I didn't choose it, but it's entirely a matter of preference. I didn't encounter any issues with gameplay. You can find some screenshots here.
Thank you for reading. I’d love to hear your suggestions as well. I’m open to recommendations for retro games that I can play on both mobile and computer. See you in the next post!
