The Last Queen
I am fascinated by Henry VIII. Although I already know his story, I never tire of watching any production related to the Tudor period. During his reign, so many historical changes took place that completely transformed a nation and influenced others. Of course, it all has to do with the fact that he had six wives, two of whom ended up being beheaded. It is a story that has all the ingredients to fascinate.
Coincidentally, last month I watched the second and final season of Wolf Hall, a series that adapts the novels centered on the man who was behind Henry VIII's power for a time, the famous Thomas Cromwell. A magnificent two-season series that portrays Cromwell's rise and fall. My goodness, that king loved to order heads to be cut off. The difference is that this series is more historically accurate than the film I am recommending today.
Firebrand gets many things right in the development of its story, but its main flaw is the liberties it takes in telling certain things. Embellishments are acceptable to add intrigue to the plot, but what bothers me is the ending. At the end, something completely made up happens, and I can't accept it as easily as the other liberties it takes. It's an adaptation of a historical novel, so yes, it has some fiction in it, but what happens at the end is hard to swallow for anyone who wants more consistency with what is documented in the historical archives.
La figura de Enrique VIII me fascina. Aunque ya conozco su historia, nunca me canso de ver cualquier producción relacionada con el periodo Tudor. Durante su reinado se produjeron tantos cambios históricos que transformaron por completo una nación e influyeron en otras. Por supuesto, todo está relacionado con el hecho de que tuvo seis esposas, dos de las cuales acabaron decapitadas. Es una historia que tiene todos los ingredientes para fascinar.
Casualmente, el mes pasado vi la segunda y última temporada de Wolf Hall, una serie que adapta las novelas centradas en el hombre que estuvo detrás del poder de Enrique VIII durante un tiempo, el famoso Thomas Cromwell. Una magnífica serie de dos temporadas que retrata el ascenso y la caída de Cromwell. Dios mío, a ese rey le encantaba ordenar que cortaran cabezas. La diferencia es que esa serie tiene una mayor precisión histórica que el film que les recomiendo hoy.
Firebrand acierta en muchas cosas en el desarrollo de su historia, pero su principal defecto son las libertades que se toma al contar ciertas cosas. Los adornos son aceptables para añadir intriga a la trama, pero lo que me molesta es el final. Al final ocurre algo totalmente inventado, y no puedo aceptarlo tan fácilmente como las otras libertades que se toma. Es una adaptación de una novela histórica, así que sí, tiene algo de ficción, pero lo que ocurre al final es difícil de tragar para cualquiera que quiera más coherencia con lo que está documentado en los archivos históricos.

The film recounts the last year of Henry VIII's reign, but specifically from the perspective of Catherine Parr, who was his sixth wife. She was a woman who had influence over the king and the fate of the kingdom, since, according to historical records and as described in other productions, she convinced the king to include Elizabeth in the line of succession, and if you know a little about these historical events, you will know that Elizabeth would eventually become queen, about whom many books have been written and many films have been made.
What is remarkable about Firebrand is that, despite being a well-known story, it creates a hypnotic atmosphere of suspense. Jude Law's portrayal of Henry VIII helps a lot. His character is repulsive, unpleasant, a true monster who instills fear. Alicia Vkander also deserves a lot of credit for her performance. She perfectly captures the terror she feels. She is a survivor and must hide, lie, and remain silent to avoid being beheaded or exiled. The film's director, who is of Brazilian origin, does a good job. His images are not shocking, but he manages to make the atmosphere uncomfortable when these two characters come face to face.
The costumes are impeccable and the photography highlights them. All these technical aspects are top-notch and help to visually enjoy the story being told. Although when I see so much beauty in these aspects, it always makes me wonder what that era would have been like in reality. Although it is set in the king's castle, I can't help but think about the smells of people who probably bathed once every 15 days or even less. In addition to other personal hygiene practices that are common today but were different at that time.
It is not historically accurate in its ending, but it is a film worth watching. Now, if you want to know more about Parr and the king's other wives, I suggest you look for information in books or on the Internet. This film is worth watching for two excellent performances.

La película narra el último año del reinado de Enrique VIII, pero específicamente desde la perspectiva de Catalina Parr, quien fue su sexta esposa. Era una mujer que tenía influencia sobre el rey y el destino del reino, ya que, según los registros históricos y tal y como se describe en otras producciones, convenció al rey para que incluyera a Isabel en la línea de sucesión, y si conoces un poco estos acontecimientos históricos, sabrás que Isabel acabaría convirtiéndose en reina de la que se han escrito muchos libros y se han rodado muchas películas sobre ella.
Lo notable de Firebrand es que, a pesar de ser una historia muy conocida, crea una atmósfera hipnótica de suspense. La interpretación de Enrique VIII por parte de Jude Law ayuda mucho. Su personaje es repulsivo, desagradable, un verdadero monstruo que infunde miedo. Alicia Vkander también merece mucho crédito por su interpretación. Captura a la perfección el terror que siente. Es una superviviente y debe esconderse, mentir y permanecer en silencio para evitar acabar decapitada o exiliada. El director de la película, de origen brasileño, hace un buen trabajo. Sus imágenes no son impactantes, pero consigue que la atmósfera sea incómoda cuando estos dos personajes se encuentran cara a cara.
El vestuario es impecable y la fotografía lo resalta. Todos estos aspectos técnicos son de primera categoría y ayudan a disfrutar visualmente de la historia que se cuenta. Aunque cuando veo tanta belleza en estos aspectos, siempre me hace imaginar cómo habría sido esa época en realidad. Aunque está ambientada en el castillo del rey, no puedo evitar pensar en los olores de la gente que probablemente se bañaba una vez cada 15 días o incluso menos. Además de otras prácticas de higiene corporal que hoy en día son comunes, pero que en aquella época eran diferentes.
No es históricamente exacto en su final, pero es una película que vale la pena ver. Ahora bien, si quieres saber más sobre Parr y las otras esposas del rey, te sugiero que busques información en libros o en Internet. Esta película merece la pena verla por dos excelentes interpretaciones.
