A dystopian future. The world has suffered an environmental catastrophe, is what we are given to understand. The remains of civilization seem to be under a strict control, a dictatorial regime that seems to enchant all human beings, because we are the ones who put in power people who want to control us as if we were fools. To regulate our lives, to decide over our lives, always under the pretext of the common good, of protecting us.
This is the context of this story directed by French filmmaker Fleur Fortuné. I don't know the filmmaker's previous works, this seems to be her debut feature. I did a search to see what other films she has directed and found nothing, only music videos, so I'll take this film as her debut.
The setting of this dystopian future, while not entirely original, is very pleasing to the eye. The use of colors and the care in art direction, manage to create an unsettling and interesting world. Although at times it seemed more like an episode of Black Mirror. Maybe because a few days ago I watched the last season of that series.

Los restos de la civilización parecen estar bajo un estricto control, un régimen dictatorial que parece encantar a todos los seres humanos, porque somos nosotros los que ponemos en el poder a la gente que quiere controlarnos como si fuéramos tontos. Regular nuestras vidas, decidir sobre nuestras vidas, siempre bajo el pretexto del bien común, de protegernos.
Este es el contexto de esta historia dirigida por la cineasta francesa Fleur Fortuné. Desconozco los trabajos anteriores de la cineasta, ésta parece ser su ópera prima. He hecho una búsqueda para ver qué otras películas ha dirigido y no he encontrado nada, sólo vídeos musicales, así que tomaré esta película como su debut.
La ambientación de este futuro distópico, aunque no del todo original, es muy agradable a la vista. El uso de los colores y el cuidado en la dirección de arte, consiguen crear un mundo inquietante e interesante. Aunque por momentos parec ía más un episodio de Black Mirror. Quizás porque hace unos días vi la última temporada de esa serie.

The main plot tells us that in this new world, where the privileged live, you have to ask the government for permission to have children. Mia and her husband, Arryan, decide to make the request, for which they receive a visit from Virginia, the consultant who will evaluate them for seven days. Those seven days will become hell for the couple as they struggle to pass the tests. I found the scenes amusing and at the same time the atmosphere becomes increasingly rarefied, surprising us with Virginia's way of acting. Watching a woman in her thirties behave like a spoiled child is absurd.
The story works for much of the film. The issue escalates, pushing the boundaries, where provocation, tension and the destruction of what seemed like an ideal home becomes the daily dynamic. Some of the supporting characters are painted with exaggeration, intended to poke fun at the privileged class, even if they speak many truths in the dinner scene. By the way, a good cast of supporting characters who deliver.
The film briefly makes the point that we should be more selfish and not think about reproducing when the environment is not favorable. Of course, that goes against our nature. While some are not driven by the desire to have children, the urge to preserve our species is stronger. Our brains act this way in real life. Reproducing is a vital part of our existence.
I loved the performances of the two lead actresses. Elizabeth Olsen as Mia and Alicia vikander as Virginia. Their performances are the best thing about the movie and what kept me hooked. Lately I am having little patience with movies, this one at least entertained me for a good while. Unfortunately it was not a movie that will last in my memory, for me it fails drastically in its resolution. Besides the fact that the film lacks punch in what should be a shocking ending, the director pretends to give us moral lessons. He had the opportunity to do better and didn't take it. Filmmakers and screenwriters, please don't want to give lessons, let the story itself flow its closure without pretending to be a moral compass.
I saw it over the weekend, without much encouragement and at least it was entertaining. It's still the French filmmaker's first film, so it will be interesting to follow it and see her next project.

La trama principal nos cuenta que en este nuevo mundo, donde viven los privilegiados, hay que pedir permiso al gobierno para tener hijos. Mia y su marido, Arryan, deciden hacer la petición, para lo que reciben la visita de Virginia, la asesora que les evaluará durante siete días. Esos siete días se convertirán en un infierno para la pareja en su lucha por superar las pruebas. Las escenas me han parecido divertidas y al mismo tiempo el ambiente se va enrareciendo cada vez más, sorprendiéndonos la forma de actuar de Virginia. Ver a una mujer de más de treinta años comportarse como una niña malcriada es absurdo.
La historia funciona durante gran parte de la película. El asunto va escalando, empujando los límites, donde la provocación, la tensión y la destrucción de lo que parecía un hogar ideal se convierte en la dinámica diaria. Algunos de los personajes secundarios están pintados con exageración, con la intención de burlarse de la clase privilegiada, aunque digan muchas verdades en la escena de la cena. Por cierto, un buen reparto de secundarios que cumplen.
La película plantea brevemente que deberíamos ser más egoístas y no pensar en reproducirnos cuando el entorno no es favorable. Por supuesto, eso va en contra de nuestra naturaleza. Aunque a algunos no les mueve el deseo de tener hijos, el impulso de preservar nuestra especie es más fuerte. Nuestros cerebros actúan así en la vida real. Reproducirnos es una parte vital de nuestra existencia.
Me encantaron las interpretaciones de las dos actrices principales. Elizabeth Olsen como Mia y Alicia vikander como Virginia. Sus interpretaciones son lo mejor de la película y lo que me mantuvo enganchado. Últimamente estoy teniendo poca paciencia con las películas, esta al menos me entretuvo un buen rato. Lamentablemente no fue una película que perdurará en mi memoria, para mi falla drásticamente en su resolución. Además de que a la película le falta garra en lo que debería ser un final impactante, el director pretende darnos lecciones morales. Tuvo la oportunidad de hacerlo mejor y no la aprovechó. Cineastas y guionistas, por favor, no quieran dar lecciones, dejen que la propia historia fluya su cierre sin pretender ser una brújula moral.
La vi el fin de semana, sin mucho animo y al menos estuvo entretenida. No deja de ser la primera película de la cineasta francesa, así que será interesante seguirla y ver su próximo proyecto.
