Hello everyone, friends of this great community, fans of good stories, I hope you are great, today I want to talk about a really unique movie, I recently got to see The Holdovers and I went crazy. I'm still kind of processing that mix of laughter and melancholy, and that 70's vibe that you can feel throughout the movie, the thing is that the story takes place in a fancy private school in the United States, in the middle of Christmas vacations, and it's about an old history teacher, a bit cranky and lonely, Paul Hunham, played by Paul Giamatti, and he does it in a way that touches your soul.. he has to stay at the school taking care of the students who have nowhere to spend the holidays, honestly, when I started watching it I didn't expect a story like this, but it really struck a chord, it really did! From the beginning, the movie shows you that it has a unique style...
From the very old Universal logo of the 70's, the colors like muted, melancholic, and that texture like an old movie, it transports you to that time, it's not just watching a movie, it's like getting into the 70's... I was stuck watching every detail, every shot looks like a painting, that nostalgic vibe fits perfectly to the emotional story. At the center of it all is Paul Hunham, this character that at the beginning seems just a bitter professor who can't stand anyone... but as the movie progresses, you realize that this bad mood is just a mask to hide a deep loneliness and pain, Giamatti's performance is brutal, from another level! it's so real and authentic that you can almost feel how lonely he feels... I couldn't help but empathize with him, it made me remember moments in my life when I felt the same way, misunderstood or overwhelmed by loneliness. who hasn't, right?
Hola a todos, amigos de esta gran comunidad, fanáticos de las buenas historias, espero que estén genial, hoy les quiero hablar de una pelÃcula realmente única, hace poco pude ver The Holdovers y quedé loco. TodavÃa estoy como procesando esa mezcla de risa y melancolÃa, y esa onda de los años 70 que se siente en toda la pelÃcula, la cosa es que la historia pasa en un colegio privado asà elegante en Estados Unidos, en plenas vacaciones de Navidad, y trata de un profesor de historia antigua, medio cascarrabias y solitario, Paul Hunham, que lo interpreta Paul Giamatti, y lo hace de una manera que te llega al alma.. a él le toca quedarse en el colegio cuidando a los estudiantes que no tienen dónde pasar las fiestas, sinceramente, cuando empecé a verla no me esperaba una historia asÃ, pero me tocó la fibra sensible, ¡de verdad!
Desde el comienzo, la pelÃcula te muestra que tiene un estilo único.. desde el logo viejÃsimo de Universal de los años 70, los colores como apagados, melancólicos, y esa textura como de pelÃcula antigua, te transporta a esa época, de pana.. no es solo ver una pelÃcula, es como meterte de lleno en los años 70.. me quedé pegado viendo cada detalle, cada toma parece una pintura, esa onda nostálgica le queda perfecto a lo emocional que es la historia. En el centro de todo está Paul Hunham, este personaje que al principio parece solo un profesor amargado que no soporta a nadie.. pero a medida que avanza la pelÃcula, te vas dando cuenta que ese mal humor es solo una máscara para esconder una soledad y un dolor profundo, la actuación de Giamatti es brutal, ¡de otro nivel! es tan real y auténtica que casi puedes sentir lo solo que se siente.. yo no pude evitar sentir empatÃa por él, me hizo recordar momentos de mi vida cuando me sentà igual, incomprendido o abrumado por la soledad. ¿A quién no le ha pasado, verdad?
And then there is Angus Tully, this student has a curious personality, always clashing with everyone... but be careful, Angus is not the typical rebel without a cause, you know? He has a vulnerable vibe hidden behind that tough attitude, that little by little they show it to you... I remember I was glued to the screen in those parts where he got more introspective and we saw what was really going on with him, his problem is not only to put up with a heavy teacher, but to accept himself, those parts that he himself wants to hide... The relationship between Angus and Paul is a beauty, really... at first they give each other a hard time, pure tension, but then it transforms into something deeper, a bond that doesn't need fancy words to make it feel real! And we can't forget Mary Lamb, the school cook, Mary is a character who has suffered a lot, scarred by the loss of her son in the Vietnam war... but despite the sadness, she has a warmth that brightens even the darkest scenes, it touched my heart how her story connects with the others, as if all her pods, good and bad, are part of the same thing, of what it means to be human.
Their conversations with Paul and Angus are full of understanding and empathy, reminding us that even in the worst moments, there is always someone who can give you a hand, even if it's in the least thought place... what I liked most about The Holdovers was how they handle drama and humor, in a brutal way! It's not the typical comedy of easy jokes or exaggerations, no, the humor comes naturally from how the characters interact and how they see life, which is bittersweet, there were moments when I laughed out loud with a comment or a gesture. The movie kind of whispers in your ear: Yes, life gives you hard knocks, but sometimes a chuckle is what you need to keep going, and that got to me! Seeing it reflected that way in the film, so natural, was like a breath of fresh air.
Y luego está Angus Tully, este estudiante tiene una personalidad curiosa, siempre chocando con todos.. pero ojo, que Angus no es el tÃpico rebelde sin causa, ¿sabes? Tiene una onda vulnerable escondida detrás de esa actitud dura, que poco a poco te la van mostrando.. yo me acuerdo que estaba pegado a la pantalla en esas partes donde se ponÃa más introspectivo y veÃamos qué onda con él de verdad, su problema no es solo aguantar a un profesor pesado, sino aceptarse a sà mismo, esas partes que él mismo quiere esconder.. La relación entre Angus y Paul es una belleza, en serio.. al principio se dan duro, pura tensión, pero después se transforma en algo más profundo, ¡un lazo que no necesita palabras rebuscadas para que se sienta real! Y no podemos olvidar a Mary Lamb, la cocinera del colegio, Mary es un personaje que ha sufrido mucho, marcada por la pérdida de su hijo en la guerra de Vietnam.. pero a pesar de la tristeza, tiene una calidez que ilumina hasta las escenas más oscuras, a mà me llegó al corazón cómo su historia se conecta con la de los otros, como si todas sus vainas, buenas y malas, fueran parte de una misma cosa, de lo que significa ser humano.
Sus conversaciones con Paul y Angus están llenas de comprensión y empatÃa, recordándonos que incluso en los peores momentos, siempre hay alguien que te puede dar una mano, aunque sea en el lugar menos pensado.. lo que más me gustó de The Holdovers fue cómo manejan el drama y el humor, ¡de una manera brutal! No es la tÃpica comedia de chistes fáciles o exageraciones, no, el humor sale natural de cómo interactúan los personajes y de cómo ven la vida, que es agridulce, hubo momentos que me reà a carcajadas con un comentario o un gesto. La pelÃcula como que te susurra al oÃdo: SÃ, la vida te da golpes duros, pero a veces una risita es lo que necesitas para seguir adelante, y eso me llegó full! Verlo reflejado asà en la pelÃcula, tan natural, fue como un respiro.
The story takes its time, at first I confess I thought: "Well, another Christmas drama...", but no way, as the movie progresses, it gets much deeper, a super moving exploration of how we connect as people... seeing these three characters learn to live together and, little by little, form a "weird family", was comforting and at the same time it kind of releases something inside you, totally cathartic! It reminds you that even the most broken people can find a way to heal and lean on others, a message that hits hard, especially now that we live so disconnected... I also loved how the movie portrays certain things about society... that the story takes place in such a luxurious private school, with its strict rules and only certain people entering, is like a subtle criticism of those social structures that separate us...
It made me think about how superficial many of those social norms can be and how important it is to break those barriers to truly understand each other. Who would have thought that a Christmas movie would make you think about such deep things about human life? And another thing that blew my mind was the music, the soundtrack, each song seemed to be carefully chosen so that you could feel exactly what the scene wanted to convey... it's not just background music, it's an element that immerses you in nostalgia, melancholy and those touches of humor that make the movie so special... there were times when I closed my eyes and let myself be carried away by the music, feeling the vibe of the 70s in each note!
La historia se toma su tiempo, al principio, confieso que pensé: "Bueno, otro drama navideño más...", pero qué va, a medida que la pelÃcula avanza, se pone mucho más profunda, una exploración súper conmovedora de cómo nos conectamos como personas.. ver a estos tres personajes aprender a convivir y, poquito a poco, formar como una "familia rara", fue reconfortante y a la vez como que te libera algo por dentro, ¡catártico total! Te recuerda que hasta la gente más rota puede encontrar cómo sanar y apoyarse en otros, un mensaje que pega durÃsimo, sobre todo ahora que vivimos tan desconectados.. también me encantó cómo la pelÃcula retrata ciertas cosas de la sociedad.. que la historia pase en un colegio privado asà de lujo, con sus reglas estrictas y que solo entra cierta gente, es como una crÃtica sutil a esas estructuras sociales que nos separan..
Me puso a pensar en lo superficial que pueden ser muchas de esas normas sociales y lo importante que es romper esas barreras para entendernos de verdad entre nosotros. ¿Quién dirÃa que una pelÃcula de Navidad te iba a dejar pensando estas cosas tan profundas sobre la vida humana? y otro punto que me dejó loco fue la música, la banda sonora, cada canción parecÃa estar escogida con pinzas para que sintieras exactamente lo que la escena querÃa transmitir.. no es música de fondo nomás, es un elemento que te mete de lleno en la nostalgia, la melancolÃa y esos toques de humor que hacen que la pelÃcula sea tan especial.. hubo momentos que cerré los ojos y me dejé llevar por la música, ¡sintiendo en cada nota la onda de los años 70!
The Holdovers is not for everyone, I warn you. It is one of those movies that you have to watch slowly and get into the story. Some people may find it slow if they are looking for pure action, but for me, I loved that slowness, it was a gift, it gives you a chance to think, to connect with the characters, and see how their stories develop naturally, although there were parts that did feel a little slow, I swear the emotional ending makes up for it all. Now, I know some of you will be thinking: Is it really worth watching? And I tell you: Yes, it is! While it initially seems like a simple story – a grumpy teacher, a troubled student, and a lonely cook – the film weaves a tale that is both for everyone and super personal. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and most of all, it made me think about how we connect with the people in our lives. How many times do we hide who we really are, only to realize we’re all in the same boat, fighting our own battles. If I had to give it a grade, I’d give it an 8.5/10.
The performances, especially Giamatti and Randolph, are out of this world! (and it’s not for nothing that they won awards for their roles) that the film has taken the 70s vibe seriously and that brutal music, make it much more than a simple Christmas drama, the rhythm may test your patience, but if you let yourself be carried away by the magic of the film, I assure you that you will leave with a story that stays in your head for a long time after the credits end.. if you are looking for something different to watch during the holidays – something that mixes the warmth of human relationships with nostalgia and a touch of humor – I recommend The Holdovers with my eyes closed.. it’s not just a movie to pass the time, it’s one of those that leave you thinking, that invites you to reflect on the beauty of being imperfect and how strong the friendships you least expect can be.. and well friends, that’s all for today.. we’ll see you in the next reviews, take care.. byebye
The Holdovers no es para todo el mundo, les aviso.. es de esas pelis que hay que ver con calma y meterse en la historia.. puede que a algunos les parezca lenta si buscan pura acción, pero a mÃ, esa calma me encantó, fue un regalo, te da chance de pensar, de conectar con los personajes, y ver cómo sus historias se desarrollan asÃ, naturalito, aunque hubo partes que sà se sintieron un poquito lentas, el final emocional te juro que lo compensa todo. Ahora, sé que algunos estarán pensando: ¿Pero en serio vale la pena verla? Y yo les digo: Si vale la pena! Aunque al principio parece una historia sencilla – un profe cascarrabias, un estudiante problemático y una cocinera que está sola – la pelÃcula teje una historia que es a la vez para todo el mundo y súper personal.. me hizo reÃr, me hizo llorar, y sobre todo, me puso a pensar en cómo nos conectamos con la gente en nuestras vidas.. cuántas veces escondemos quiénes somos de verdad, para luego darnos cuenta que todos estamos en la misma, luchando nuestras propias batallas, si tuviera que ponerle una nota, le doy un 8.5/10.
Las actuaciones, sobre todo las de Giamatti y Randolph, ¡son de otro planeta! (y no por nada se ganaron premios por sus papeles) que la pelÃcula se haya tomado en serio la onda de los 70 y esa música brutal, la hacen mucho más que un simple drama navideño, el ritmo quizás ponga a prueba tu paciencia, pero si te dejas llevar por la magia de la pelÃcula, te aseguro que sales con una historia que se te queda pegada en la cabeza por mucho tiempo después de que terminen los créditos.. si andan buscando algo diferente para ver en las fiestas – algo que mezcle la calidez de las relaciones humanas con nostalgia y un toque de humor – les recomiendo The Holdovers a ojos cerrados.. no es solo una pelÃcula para pasar el rato, es de esas que te dejan pensando, que te invitan a reflexionar sobre lo bonito de ser imperfectos y lo fuerte que pueden ser las amistades que menos te esperas.. y bueno amigos, eso es todo por hoy.. nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuÃdense.. byebye.
