Recuerdo que una de las cantantes favoritas de mi hermana en la universidad era Amy Winehouse y aunque ella y yo tenemos el gusto musical parecido a mí no me terminaba de gustar, si tenía una voz increíble no lo voy a negar pero creo que era más su estilo que no me fascinaba, luego de tanto escucharla por mi hermana me terminé aprendiendo algunas de sus canciones y bueno su muerte fue muy sonada y muy triste y desde que se estrenó su película tenía pendiente verla. Tenía mucha curiosidad por ver como iba ser esta historia, se muestra el ascenso a la fama de esta cantante británica y su tormentosa relación con Blake Fielder Civil pero a mí parecer no se logró captar todo lo complejo de la vida y las luchas de Winehouse y sentí que se perdió una oportunidad de honrar verdaderamente su legado.

Back to Black se centra principalmente en la relación de Amy Winehouse con Blake Fielder Civil y en cómo ese amor turbulento inspiró su álbum ganador de un Grammy, Amy es una joven talentosa cantante de jazz con una voz y una personalidad inconfundibles y canta en pequeños locales, mostrando sus dones vocales y su estilo único, también se ve la estrecha relación de Amy con su abuela Cynthia, que fue un soporte para su vida. La historia avanza cuando Amy conoce a Blake y esa intensa relación se convierte en el centro, su historia de amor es un sube y baja porque Blake va y viene en la vida de Amy, no me queda duda de que este tipo es un completo narcisista, con todo este material Amy compuso muchas de sus canciones. La fama de Amy tras el éxito de su disco crece junto con la presión que esto genera y los paparazzi siempre están pendiente de su vida viendo cada uno de sus movimientos y pasos en falso, siempre he creído que muchos de los famosos caen en las drogas porque no tienen libertad ni privacidad, su vida se vuelve del público y esto debe ser abrumador yo no podría con tanta presión. Hay mucho de Amy luchando contra la adicción y me parece que hubo muy poca muestra de su don musical y se prestó más atención a sus problemas personales.

La protagonista es Marisa Abelay me pareció que asumió un gran reto porque mostró todo lo increíble de Amy sus gestos característicos y su increíble voz, ella misma cantó en la película, aunque la voz de Amy es única y nadie la puede copiar a la perfección a mí me pareció que Abela captó su esencia y eso para mí es suficiente. Jack OConnell interpreta a Blake Fielder Civil, el problemático ex marido de Amy se ve simpático y uno dice ya sé porque Amy se sentía atraída por él pero también se ve su parte destructiva, tienen bastante química y al principio se ve como una relación apasionada que después se vuelve tóxica.

Las escenas que muestran el talento musical de Amy son muy buenas y para mí lo mejor de la película es la actuación de Marisa Abela porque logró mostrar toda su personalidad, pero no puedo evitar pensar que falla en varios aspectos importantes como que tapa la compleja vida de Amy con una historia bastante sencilla de un romance condenado al fracaso y adicción y no muestra a fondo lo que la llevó a esto que estoy segura que fueron muchas más cosas que una relación fallida. Copsas que me molestaron muchísimo fue como pintan a Blake como una figura problemática pero simpática, en lugar de mostrar que fue una influencia destructiva y el papel de Mitch su papá, aparece como si tuviera buenas intenciones y yo he leído que el tipo al parecer era un explotador y que lo que más amaba de su hija era el dinero, por eso siento que la película no le hace honor a ella y pone a los malos como unos corderitos. Tampoco se muestra mucho el don musical y creativo de Amy, lo que me pareció que botaron la bola o sea lo desperdiciaron porque el arte era una parte importante de su personalidad y ella quería ser recordada como cantante y por su voz y más bien en esta película lo que se muestra son sus problemas personales.

El final de Back to Black es decepcionante porque no se muestra explícitamente la muerte de Amy sino que termina con una nota que intenta honrar su deseo de ser recordada por su música y no por sus problemas y aunque esto me pareció respetuoso fue como si la película se está guardando algo y no quiso mostrar la tragedia de su muerte a los 27 años. Lo más frustrante es que no hay mucha información sobre su vida y su carrera, ni de su impacto duradero en la música ni de las lecciones que pueden aprenderse de su lucha contra la fama y la adicción, yo le doy un 6/10 porque se presenta como una triste historia de un talento truncado y no se profundiza en lo que esto significa, aunque hay escenas en las que se ve a los paparazzi acosando a Amy y momentos en los que se insinúan las presiones a las que se enfrentaba, la película no tiene una postura firme sobre quién o qué fue responsable de sus problemas y quizás esto no dejó que la película llegara a ser lo que pudo haber sido. La música es fantástica aunque me hubiera gustado ver más del proceso creativo de Amy y de sus actuaciones y que se mostrara quién era ella en realidad, más allá de los titulares de la prensa amarillista y el personaje público.

I remember that one of my sister's favorite singers in college was Amy Winehouse and although she and I have similar musical taste I didn't like her, she had an incredible voice I won't deny it but I think it was more her style that didn't fascinate me, after listening to her so much for my sister I ended up learning some of her songs and well her death was very sad and very sad and since her movie was released I had pending to see it. I was very curious to see how this story was going to be, it shows the rise to fame of this British singer and her stormy relationship with Blake Fielder Civil but in my opinion it failed to capture all the complexities of Winehouse's life and struggles and I felt it missed an opportunity to truly honor her legacy.

The story progresses when Amy meets Blake and that intense relationship becomes the center, their love story is an up and down because Blake comes and goes in Amy's life, I have no doubt that this guy is a complete narcissist, with all this material Amy composed many of her songs. Amy's fame after the success of her album grows along with the pressure that this generates and the paparazzi are always watching her life watching her every move and misstep, I have always believed that many celebrities fall into drugs because they have no freedom or privacy, their life becomes the public's and this must be overwhelming I couldn't handle so much pressure. There is a lot of Amy struggling with addiction and it seems to me that there was very little showcasing of her musical gift and more attention was paid to her personal problems.

The lead is Marisa Abelay I thought she took on a great challenge because she showed all that is amazing about Amy her signature mannerisms and her incredible voice, she sang in the film herself, although Amy's voice is unique and no one can copy it perfectly to me I thought Abela captured her essence and that for me is enough. Jack OConnell plays Blake Fielder Civil, Amy's troubled ex-husband looks sympathetic and one says I know why Amy was attracted to him but you also see his destructive side, they have quite a bit of chemistry and at first it looks like a passionate relationship that later turns toxic.

The scenes that show Amy's musical talent are very good and for me the best part of the movie is Marisa Abela's performance because she managed to show her whole personality, but I can't help but think that it fails in several important aspects like it covers Amy's complex life with a rather simple story of a doomed romance and addiction and it doesn't show in depth what led her to this which I'm sure was many more things than a failed relationship. Cops that annoyed the hell out of me was how they paint Blake as a troubled but sympathetic figure, instead of showing that he was a destructive influence and the role of Mitch her dad, he comes across as having good intentions and I have read that the guy apparently was an exploiter and what he loved most about his daughter was the money, so I feel the movie doesn't honor her and sets up the bad guys as lambs. Amy's musical and creative gift is not shown much either, which seemed to me that they threw the ball away because art was an important part of her personality and she wanted to be remembered as a singer and for her voice and rather in this movie what is shown are her personal problems.

The ending of Back to Black is disappointing because it doesn't explicitly show Amy's death but ends on a note that tries to honor her desire to be remembered for her music and not her problems and while I found this respectful it was as if the film is holding something back and didn't want to show the tragedy of her death at 27. What is most frustrating is that there is not much information about his life and career, neither of his lasting impact on music nor the lessons that can be learned from his struggle with fame and addiction, I give it a 6/10 because it comes across as a sad story of a talent cut short and doesn't delve into what this means, although there are scenes of the paparazzi harassing Amy and moments that hint at the pressures she was facing, the film doesn't take a firm stance on who or what was responsible for her problems and perhaps this didn't let the film become what it could have been. The music is fantastic although I would have liked to have seen more of Amy's creative process and performances and shown who she really was beyond the tabloid headlines and public persona.
