Vi Companion completamente a ciegas, pensaba que se trataba de una comedia romántica y me equivoqué resultó ser un thriller de ciencia ficción de esos buenos que cuando la película termina la quieres volver a ver para estar pendiente de todo por si algo se pasó por alto. Yo siempre estoy echando broma diciendo que tengo un déficit de atención no diagnosticado porque me desconcentro muy fácilmente o me hiperenfoco jjajaajjajaa, entonces cuando una película está muy buena y siento que me perdí algo la devuelvo un poco o la veo de nuevo si me gustó bastante sin ningún problema y eso pasó con Companion. Esta película muestra un futuro más cercano de lo que creemos donde los robots cada vez son más accesibles y lo que más me gustó es que muestra las consecuencias o lo que implica humanizar tanto a los robots.

Hay un grupo de amigos donde aparece Iris, Josh y Kat que se van de viaje un fin de semana, se nota que Iris no se siente nada cómoda con los amigos de Josh y que aparte no le cae muy bien Kat, más adelante se muestra que Iris es un robot que Josh ha comprado, pero ella no cae en cuenta de que es un robot ella cree que es humana y Josh la puede controlar fácilmente a través de una aplicación que tiene en su celular. La cosa se pone turbia cuando Sergey uno de los amigos que está de vacaciones con ellos se le insinúa a Iris y ella lo mata en defensa propia, algo que debería ser imposible porque si ella está programada no pudo haber hecho esto por cuenta propia, bueno acá se descubre todo el plan que tenían Kat y Josh que utilizaron el robot para matar a Sergey por su dinero y luego pensaban destruirla y hacer ver que todo fue un accidente. Lo que pasa es que no fue fácil porque Iris descubrió la verdad sobre su existencia y empieza a desarrollar sensibilidad algo que va más allá de su programación.

Quizás la trama parece algo ridícula pero la verdad funciona, la película crea un mundo realista y sea hace fácil creer en la idea de que esta tecnología pueda existir en un futuro cercano, además de que las actuaciones son muy buenas Sophie Thatcher que hace de Iris al principio parece un robot por sus movimientos y reacciones pero a medida que avanza la historia se ve como más humana, también está Jack Quaid como Josh que debo decir me engañó porque parece un buen muchacho pero poco a poco va saliendo su lado oscuro, la verdad yo me imaginaba más un rollo con Iris tratando de matar a todo el mundo pero el que salió con ese plan tan perverso fue Josh, me recordó a su papel en una de las películas de Scream donde el aparenta ser bueno y resulta que es todo lo contrario. Megan Suri es Kat, Rupert Friend es Sergey y Lukas Gage, Harvey Guillén también aparecen en la película como los amigos de Josh.

A mí me gustó de Companion que a la vez que te mantiene pendiente de la trama llama a la reflexión y no todas las películas logran eso sino hasta el final. Hay muchos temas sobre la ética de la inteligencia artificial, el dinero y las relaciones y el modo en que la tecnología puede ser usada con fines oscuros, a mí por lo menos me preocupa mucho el uso de la inteligencia artificial sobre todo con los chamos de ahorita que no les gusta leer ni investigar y se dejan llevar por todo lo que dice la AI y a veces no tienen mucho criterio, no digo que estoy en contra de esta herramienta la verdad me parece valiosa si se le da un buen uso, a lo que quiero llegar es que si hay mucha ética y pensamiento crítico metido en todo este asunto y que esta película no es del todo loca, creo que son cosas que pueden suceder si no se controlan.

Iris ha sido programada para ser la novia perfecta complaciendo a Josh sin tener voz ni voto hasta que comienza a tomar conciencia de sí misma y a cuestionar su programación con esto empieza a buscar su propia identidad y parece que logra tener cierta autonomía, esto se ve más en el final cuando consigue reprogramarse ella misma y se enfrenta a Josh y lo mata. Yo le doy un 7.5/10 a Companion porque es una historia bien elaborada de ciencia ficción sobre la tecnología, además que el tema es super interesante y genera mucho debate entre la ética de la AI y las relaciones humanas, aunque me hubiese gustado que se tratara más a fondo el tema de la AI como una amenaza o con cuestiones de autoconsciencia o libre albedrío, si no me equivoco esta es la primera película de este director y la verdad me gustó bastante, vería sus próximas películas.

I watched Companion completely blind, I thought it was a romantic comedy and I was wrong it turned out to be one of those good sci-fi thrillers that when the movie ends you want to watch it again to keep an eye on everything in case something was missed. I'm always joking that I have an undiagnosed attention deficit because I get unfocused very easily or hyperfocused hahahahahahahaha, so when a movie is really good and I feel I missed something I send it back a bit or watch it again if I liked it enough without any problem and that happened with Companion. This movie shows a future closer than we think where robots are becoming more and more accessible and what I liked the most is that it shows the consequences or what it implies to humanize robots so much.

There is a group of friends where Iris, Josh and Kat go on a weekend trip, you can tell that Iris does not feel comfortable with Josh's friends and she does not like Kat, later it is shown that Iris is a robot that Josh has bought, but she does not realize that she is a robot, she thinks she is human and Josh can easily control her through an application on his cell phone. Things get messy when Sergey one of the friends who is on vacation with them makes a pass at Iris and she kills him in self-defense, something that should be impossible because if she is programmed she could not have done this on her own, well here we discover the whole plan that Kat and Josh had, they used the robot to kill Sergey for his money and then they planned to destroy her and make it look like it was all an accident. What happens is that it was not easy because Iris discovered the truth about its existence and begins to develop sensitivity something that goes beyond its programming.

Maybe the plot seems a little ridiculous but it really works, the movie creates a realistic world and makes it easy to believe in the idea that this technology could exist in the near future, plus the performances are very good Sophie Thatcher who plays Iris at the beginning seems like a robot for her movements and reactions but as the story progresses she looks more human, There is also Jack Quaid as Josh who I must say fooled me because he seems like a good guy but little by little his dark side is coming out, the truth I imagined more of a roll with Iris trying to kill everyone but the one who came out with such a perverse plan was Josh, it reminded me of his role in one of the Scream movies where he appears to be good and it turns out to be the opposite. Megan Suri is Kat, Rupert Friend is Sergey and Lukas Gage, Harvey Guillen also appear in the movie as Josh's friends.

I liked Companion because while it keeps you engaged in the plot, it's also thought-provoking and not all movies do that until the very end. There are many issues about the ethics of artificial intelligence, money and relationships and the way technology can be used for dark purposes, I for one am very concerned about the use of artificial intelligence especially with the kids of today who don't like to read or research and get carried away by everything the AI says and sometimes don't have much judgment, I am not saying that I am against this tool, the truth is that I think it is valuable if it is put to good use, what I want to get to is that there is a lot of ethics and critical thinking involved in this whole thing and that this movie is not entirely crazy, I think these are things that can happen if they are not controlled.

Iris has been programmed to be the perfect girlfriend pleasing Josh with no say until she starts to become self aware and question her programming with this she starts to search for her own identity and seems to get some autonomy, this is seen more in the ending when she gets to reprogram herself and confronts Josh and kills him. I give a 7.5/10 to Companion because it is a well elaborated science fiction story about technology, besides the subject is super interesting and generates a lot of debate between the ethics of AI and human relationships, although I would have liked that the subject of AI as a threat or with questions of self-awareness or free will was treated more thoroughly, if I'm not mistaken this is the first film of this director and I really liked it, I would see his next films.
