¡Hola Hola Comunidad! ✨, ¿Alguna vez han escuchado el término comfort movie?, pues resulta que no es más que una expresión que se suele utilizar para destacar como una película puede convertirse en nuestro lugar seguro, o que es una historia que nos genera tal comodidad y bienestar, que solemos regresar a ella y verla en repetidas ocasiones justamente para generarnos ésta sensación de tranquilidad. Resulta que desde hace años la película de la que hablaremos hoy, se ha conversado justamente en mi comfort movie, pero alguna razón hasta ahora no les había hablado de ella, lo cual me parece injusto y toca solucionarlo 🤣, así que hoy les daré mi opinión cero objetiva de Penélope🐷💕.

🐷 SINOPSIS || SYNOPSIS 💖
Penélope Wilhern ha nacido con una maldición, hace siglos su familia fue el blanco del hechizo de una bruja que dicta que solo se romperá el día en que “uno de su misma clase la acepte y ame para toda la vida”, por lo que durante toda su vida Penélope ha crecido encerrada y sobreprotegida por sus padres, quienes al ser de la alta sociedad no han escatimado esfuerzos en intentar romper con la maldición, por lo que desde los 18 años han organizado encuentros con jóvenes de “sangre azul” con el propósito de concertar un matrimonio, sin embargo ninguno de sus esfuerzos ha válido la pena, pues todos los chicos han huido asustados de la mansión Wilhern. No obstante, un día esto cambia y conocemos a Max, aunque al inicio todo parece indicar que ocurrirá lo mismo que veces anteriores, hay algo en él que hace que todo sea distinto, y que para Penélope todo un nuevo rumbo.

🐷 SOLO UN SANGRE AZUL LO PUEDO CAMBIAR TODO || ONLY A BLUE BLOOD CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING 💖
Honestamente no puedo decir cuántas veces he visto ésta película, solo puedo asegurar que han pasado más de 10 años desde que la descubrí por primera vez, y al menos la he visto una o dos veces por año. Sin embargo, hace mucho tiempo que me había olvidado de ella, y hace unas semanas me pareció una escena en tik tok y fue mi señal para inmediatamente buscarla y verla 💖. En ese sentido, no voy a tapar el sol con un dedo, la película tiene muchos detalles visuales que son raros 🤣, pero que tienen un poco de sentido para el año en que fue hecha, estamos hablando de un proyecto que salió en el 2006 y sabemos que para esa época solo aquellas producciones con grandes presupuestos lograban tener efectos especiales medianamente decentes, y ésta película no entraba en esa lista.
Hablamos entonces de una comedia romántica de fantasía, que busca modernizar una historia que bien podría ser un cuento, toda la trama gira en torno a la maldición y como Penélope tiene que ir en contra del aspecto físico que dicho hechizo le deja, logrando que un chico millonario de familia aristocrática se enamore de ella o la acepte lo suficiente como para querer, voluntariamente, casarse con ella, ¿Entienden el terrible mensaje que eso deja cierto? 🤦🏻♀️, pero tranquilos porque al final se resuelve de la manera correcta.
I honestly can't say how many times I've seen this movie, I can only say for sure that it's been over 10 years since I first discovered it, and I've at least seen it once or twice a year. However, I had long forgotten about it, and a few weeks ago I happened upon a scene on tik tok and it was my cue to immediately seek it out and watch it 💖. On that note, I'm not going to cover the sun with a finger, the movie has many visual details that are weird 🤣, but that make a bit of sense for the year it was made, we are talking about a project that came out in 2006 and we know that by that time only those productions with big budgets managed to have halfway decent special effects, and this movie didn't fit in that list.
We are talking then about a fantasy romantic comedy, which seeks to modernize a story that could well be a tale, the whole plot revolves around the curse and how Penelope has to go against the physical aspect that such spell leaves her, making a millionaire boy from an aristocratic family fall in love with her or accept her enough to want, voluntarily, to marry her, do you understand the terrible message that leaves right? 🤦🏻♀️, but rest assured that it is resolved in the right way in the end.
Las razones que me han llevado a querer tanto ésta película han ido cambiando conforme yo he ido creciendo, durante los primeros años obviamente mi mayor foco de atención se iba al romance, pero ahora que la ví ya con 25 años y cierta mirada más objetiva, pude notar como es más que solo una película romántica con efectos especiales raros; se trata de una historia que nos habla del autoconcepto, del amor propio y del crecimiento personal.
Penélope es una chica que lleva toda su vida resguardada como una muñequita de porcelana bajo las grandes y costosas paredes de una casa que se ha convertido en una cárcel, viendo durante años como decenas de hombres se horrorizan de su apariencia física y huyen aterrorizados de ella, y ahí es donde toma relevancia el personaje de Max, porque no, su rol destacable no es el de enamorarse de ella, eso es solo un extra, su gran contribución a la vida de Penélope es hacerla tocar fondo y decirle de alguna manera “mereces algo mejor que ésto”.
The reasons that have led me to love this movie so much have changed as I have grown up, during the first years obviously my main focus was on romance, but now that I saw it when I was 25 years old and with a more objective look, I could notice how it is more than just a romantic movie with weird special effects; it is a story that talks about self-concept, self-love and personal growth.
Penelope is a girl who has spent her whole life sheltered like a porcelain doll under the big, expensive walls of a house that has become a prison, watching for years as dozens of men are horrified by her physical appearance and run away terrified of her, and that's where Max's character takes relevance, because no, his outstanding role is not to fall in love with her, that's just an extra, his great contribution to Penelope's life is to make her hit rock bottom and tell her somehow “you deserve better than this ”.
Es después de tocar fondo que Penélope dice “ya basta” y decide que es el momento de ir y explorar el mundo, ver cómo es, ver si puede encajar en él, ¿Y saben cuál es la sorpresa?, que sí, hay un espacio en ese mundo que la acepta, que la ve un poco como un fenómeno porque no es normal que una chica tenga cara de cerdo, pero que aún así la acepta y le presenta posibilidades de ya no volver a esa cárcel llamada hogar, y en ésto la película es muy realista, no intenta en ningún momento ser políticamente correcta, sino que es cruda con lo que hay y presenta.
Tan cruda que no esconde que la gran villana de la historia es realmente la madre de Penélope, una mujer tan obsesionada con el aspecto físico en general que le repite constantemente a su hija que “eso que ve en el espejo no es ella realmente, la verdadera Penélope está encerrada”, y que aún al final, luego de ver cuál era la verdadera solución del hechizo, sigue destacando que lo más importante es como luce físicamente.

So crude that it does not hide that the great villain of the story is really Penelope's mother, a woman so obsessed with physical appearance in general that she constantly repeats to her daughter that “what she sees in the mirror is not really her, the real Penelope is locked up ”, and that even at the end, after seeing what the real solution to the spell was, she continues to emphasize that the most important thing is how she looks physically.
En cuanto a actuaciones, debo decir que definitivamente Christina Ricci tiene un talento increíble para interpretar personajes poco normales 🤣, por algo fue Merlina, y con Penélope no fue la excepción, si bien considero que no es su papel más destacable, la verdad es que su trabajo es muy genuino, puedes ver el asombro y la ingenuidad que caracterizan al personaje, una joven adulta que como he mencionado anteriormente, creció bajo el absoluto encierro y que obviamente cuando sale al mundo, hay muchas cosas que no conoce y no entiende cómo funcionan, pero que eso no la detiene en su determinación por comenzar a ser independiente.
Ahora bien, James McAvoy en un papel de alguien “normal” sí que es bastante raro de ver, pero igualmente logra hacer un trabajo increíble, tanto que no ves venir en ningún momento el plot twist de su personaje 🤣. Un punto que además me gusta mucho de su personaje, es que no se trata de “un príncipe de brillante armadura” y de hecho él mismo nunca se pinta así, es algo que queda muy claro desde el inicio y que él mismo repite constantemente con sus acciones, al final la única persona capaz de salvar a Penélope, es la misma Penélope.
As for performances, I must say that definitely Christina Ricci has an incredible talent to play not very normal characters 🤣, she was Merlina for a reason, and with Penelope was not the exception, although I consider that it is not her most outstanding role, the truth is that her work is very genuine, you can see the wonder and naivety that characterize the character, a young adult who as I mentioned before, grew up under absolute confinement and obviously when she goes out into the world, there are many things she doesn't know and doesn't understand how they work, but that doesn't stop her in her determination to start being independent.
Now, James McAvoy in a role of someone “normal” yes that is quite rare to see, but equally manages to do an amazing job, so much so that you don't see the plot twist of his character coming at any time 🤣. A point that I also like a lot about his character, is that he is not “a prince in shining armor” and in fact he himself never paints himself like that, it is something that is very clear from the beginning and that he himself constantly repeats with his actions, in the end the only person capable of saving Penelope, is Penelope herself.
Es una película que tiene sus años, no hay que juzgarla demasiado 🤣, pero definitivamente es de esas que llegaron a mi vida para quedarse y ser vistas año tras año, no es para todos los gustos eso está clarísimo, así que no la recomiendo abiertamente a todos solo aquellos que disfrutan de películas románticas raras 🤭.
It's a movie that has its years, not to judge it too much 🤣, but it's definitely one of those that came into my life to stay and be watched year after year, it's not for all tastes that's crystal clear, so I don't openly recommend it to everyone only those who enjoy weird romantic movies 🤭.
