Welcome to “L’AQUEDUC SAINT-CLÉMENT in MONTPELLIER ~ FRANCE” 🇫🇷
Today we will walk over the large city square “Place and Promenade du Peyrou”. Past the beautiful statue of Louise XIV on a horse, towards the Château d’eau du Peyrou (water tower). Once we climbed its steps there to go behind it, we can see the aqueduct much better. Believe me… the views over the city of Montpellier there are stunning. After enjoying all this we will walk down more steps and wander along the aqueduct a bit to see it from a lower ground level, capturing all its stunning details. Come along and join me today.
With this post I’m joining in at the Wednesday Walk #challenge. That is hosted by @tattoodjay every week on Wednesday.

Location of the Aqueduct in Montpellier we find on the following screenshots of Google Maps :
As you can see it’s close to the arc de triomphe.
Zooming out we see its location in south east France, close to the Mediterranean Sea:
More information about the Aqueduct you find on the following webpages:
On Wikipedia in French - Saint-Clément Aqueduc.
On Montpellier tourisme in French.
On Visitacity - Aqueduct from Montpellier! In English.
The above website tells us the following information:
The aqueduct is 880 meter long and about 22 meters high. The arches over the aqueduct span about 3 meters while the larger arches are nearly 9 meters. It also features a masonry bridge dating back to the 18th century.
More information about the Place royale du Peyrou you find here: Visitacity - Place royale du Peyrou
More information about the large Statue is available here: Equestrian statue of Louis XIV in Wikipedia
Do have a read as it is nice to know a bit more about these historical landmarks.
Shall we wander around to check it all out now?
Great… let’s go!
As we walk over the large square we see in the middle of it right away the large statue.
A plaque with more information:
Seeing the statue with horse. What a great day… bright blue sky, no clouds make it stand out a lot.
We walk further over the square. On both sides there are tree lined areas for shade in hot summer days. As it is spring we can walk through the middle where no trees are. We see the chateau d’eau. On each side there are stairs you can climb.
It is surrounded by water and right before us we see a sundial on the ground. You stand on the month it is and your shadow tells you the time. Yes, I tried it out and it was correct (if you count the summer time change of the clock)
We walk to the right side and half way climbing up the steps we see the aqueduct.
A plaque with more information about it in French.
The aqueduct is behind a very spiky fence/ gate. It isn’t open to the public anymore…
A bit further more obstacles so you can’t go further if you managed to get past the gate. Sadly vandalised… you do see the views over some of the cities neighbourhoods.
We walk a bit further to the left side of the gate… and try to capture the aqueduct better. Hhhmmm not that great views of it.
Just have a look at how spiky the sides of the gate are. You surely don’t want to be caught with your leg in that…
As we wander slowly down some steps that go lower than the square we came from. We can see the aqueduct better.
Along the way down I saw this beautiful wooden door.
At the bottom of the steps we can see so much more. Great! Let’s discover it all.
We stand for a while to take in these stunning views of this landmark.
There is a sign from Jean Moulin.
It tells us;
that this is the spot of the most famous photograph of Jean Moulin and it was taken during the winter of 1939-1940. A hero of the Resistance.
Zooming out a bit.
From this spot we look towards the left.
We wander along it and there are more steps to go down further. We see the aqueduct even closer by now.
Looking behind us we see the Chateau d’eau.
As we reach the bottom we walk on the right side of the aqueduct now.
My favourite photo from it today:
I love the green trees… they frame it well.
Zooming in on the top part.
And further along the aqueduct. Stunning isn’t it?
Yes… it is worth wandering much further along it to see the best views.
If you ever visit this city. Don’t stop at the water tower. Walk down many many steps… you can see so much more from it.
There are also some cute bars and restaurants… with a weekly market under the aqueduct that is nice to visit.
…and here I say that’s all for today’s post my friends.
Join me next time for more updates, adventures, #stories and photographs.
Even my own artworks, once in a while, will come by.
