Creo que por fin podré volver a Hive de forma regular puesto que ya las responsabilidades académicas están terminando, por lo que tendré mucho más tiempo para hacer cosas que me gustan. Y una de esas es hacer reseñas de películas que haya visto, siendo una de las más recientes (aunque salió hace años) Midsommar. Dirigida por Ari Aster es una película de terror psicológico que por lo que he visto recibió opiniones divididas, pero aún así llamó mucho la atención en su momento y hoy les quiero compartir mi opinión.

I think I'll finally be able to return to Hive regularly since my academic responsibilities are ending, so I'll have a lot more time to do things I like. And one of those is reviewing movies I've seen, one of the most recent (although it came out years ago) being Midsommar. Directed by Ari Aster, it's a psychological horror movie that, from what I've seen, received mixed reviews, but still caught a lot of attention at the time, and today I want to share my opinion about it with you.

Dani es una joven estudiante universitaria que atraviesa por un momento difícil de su vida. Su relación seria con Christian está volviéndose más distante, ella está lejos de casa, no tiene amigos y lo peor estaría por llegar el día que recibe una terrible noticia: Toda su familia ha muerto por culpa de su hermana. Esto rompe y trauma profundamente a Dani, quien se siente profundamente triste y desamparada, intentando encontrar apoyo emocional en su pareja sin mucho éxito. Él ya no siente lo mismo por ella, además sus amigos lo incitan constantemente a terminar la relación.
Es justamente en esos momentos difíciles que Dani descubre que Christian y sus amigos tienen planeado ir de viaje a Suecia a celebrar el Midsommar o fiesta del verano en una pequeña y remota comunidad. Dani se siente mal por haber sido excluída, por lo que su novio en un intento de arreglar las cosas (o quizás por simple culpabilidad) la invita a ir también.
Ella acepta, piensa que así podrá distraerse de todo lo ocurrido, pero cuando llega a la comunidad lo que menos encontrará es tranquilidad... ¿O quizá sí?
Dani is a young college student going through a difficult time in her life. Her serious relationship with Christian is becoming more distant, she's far from home, she has no friends, and the worst is yet to come when she receives terrible news: her entire family has died because of her sister. This breaks and deeply traumatizes Dani, who feels profoundly sad and helpless, trying to find emotional support in her partner without much success. He no longer feels the same way about her, and his friends constantly encourage him to end the relationship.
It is precisely during these difficult times that Dani discovers that Christian and his friends are planning to go on a trip to Sweden to celebrate Midsommar, or the summer festival, in a small, remote community. Dani feels bad for having been excluded, so her boyfriend, in an attempt to fix things (or perhaps out of simple guilt), invites her to go too.
She agrees, thinking that this way she'll be able to distract herself from everything that's happened, but when she arrives at the community, the last thing she'll find is peace... Or maybe she will?
Los peligros de la vulnerabilidad | The dangers of vulnerability
Para mí esta película no es de terror per se, al menos no del típico terror puesto que aunque obviamente sí tiene ciertos elementos más para generar impacto que para encajar en la trama en sí, lo cierto es que el foco, a mí parecer, es la psicología de una persona en un estado profundamente vulnerable. Dani no solo está apenas procesando un duelo, sino que esas muertes no fueron en circuntancias comunes y en el momento donde más necesitaba apoyo emocional, donde más quería comprensión y afecto cercano, fue donde menos lo tuvo.
Imagina que estando muy lejos de tu hogar te llamen en medio de la noche para decirte que tu hermana se suicidó y que mató a tus padres también en el proceso... Es desgarrador para cualquier persona. Pero ahora imagina que en ese momento no tengas a nadie con quien hablar, nadie que se preocupe por ti o quiera cuidarte. Dani quedó completamente sola. ¿Cómo te haría sentir esa vulnerabilidad? Por eso cuando llegan a esa comunidad las cosas que viven para Dani se sienten más a flor de piel, sus emociones y respuestas son mucho más intensas puesto que apenas puede sobrellevar tantas cosas a la vez. Está abrumada y no cuenta con ningún apoyo para regularse. Ni siquiera de su pareja.
For me, this film isn't horror per se, at least not the typical horror kind. While it obviously has certain elements more to create impact than to fit the plot itself, the truth is that the focus, in my opinion, is on the psychology of a person in a deeply vulnerable state. Dani is not only just processing grief, but those deaths didn't happen under ordinary circumstances, and at the moment when she most needed emotional support, when she most wanted understanding and close affection, she had it the least.
Imagine being far from home and getting a call in the middle of the night to tell you that your sister committed suicide, killing your parents in the process as well... It's heartbreaking for anyone. But now imagine that in that moment you have no one to talk to, no one who cares or wants to take care of you. Dani is completely alone. How would that vulnerability make you feel? That's why, when they arrive at that community, Dani feels more raw her emotions and responses much more intense, as she can barely cope with so many things at once. She's overwhelmed and has no support to regulate herself, not even from her partner.
La relación que ella mantiene con Christian se ha vuelto dependiente, al punto que llega a justificar errores de él que en verdad no tienen justificación alguna. Dani en su desespero por sentir que no está sola se aferra a una relación que ya está rota, a alguien que le da migajas de afecto y atención porque Christian, en su inmadurez y falta de responsabilidad afectiva, no toma la decisión de terminar. Entonces creo que este es el verdadero terror en esta historia, las consecuencias de situaciones desafortunadas que derivan en traumas que de no tratarse, llevan a más dificultades o incluso el colapso de una persona.
Porque lidiar con una situación tan complicada como esta sola es incluso más difícil, y por ello Dani encuentra seguridad en la comunidad. Porque, al menos en apariencia, estas personas le mostraron un mínimo de empatía. Le dieron atención, la incluyeron en sus actividades, hicieron cosas que le hicieran sentir comprendida, que en realidad no estaba sola. Y esto puede parecer bonito, pero detrás de acciones que parecen inocentes, pueden esconderse otras intenciones.
Her relationship with Christian has become dependent, to the point where she even tries to justify his mistakes that truly have no justification. In her desperation to feel like she's not alone, Dani clings to a relationship that's already broken, to someone who gives her crumbs of affection and attention because Christian, in his immaturity and lack of emotional responsibility, doesn't make the decision to finally end it. So I think this is the true terror in this story: the consequences of unfortunate situations that result in trauma that, if left untreated, leads to further difficulties or even the collapse of a person.
Because dealing with a situation as complicated as this alone is even more difficult, and that's why Dani finds security in the community. Because, at least on the surface, these people showed her a modicum of empathy. They gave her attention, included her in their activities, did things to make her feel understood, that she wasn't really alone. And this may seem nice, but behind seemingly innocent actions, other intentions can hide.
Ese es el peligro de la vulnerabilidad. Cuando te topas con una persona (o grupo) con malas intenciones que nota esto, les resultará fácil engañarte y hacerte creer que te quieren ayudar, cuando en realidad sólo se aprovecharán de ti. Esto no significa que Dani sea estúpida o ingenua, sino que estaba tan emocionalmente afectada que simplemente no estaba en la posición para ser más cuidadosa. En un estado vulnerable difícilmente tomarás decisiones desde la lógica, porque los sentimientos pueden ser tan abrumadores que terminen por nublar tu juicio.
Esto en la película lo demuestran con la gente de la comunidad que más que seguir tradiciones son una secta. Es cliché pero en realidad es la metodología que utilizan estas personas para «captar» a personas fácilmente manipulables que hagan lo que ellos quieran, convenciéndolos de que en realidad es para su beneficio y que solo quieren ayudar. Aunque haya sido representado en montones de historias, esto sigue pasando y bastante frecuentemente, tanto con sectas como personas que buscan a víctimas para someter. De una forma u otra, siempre hay personas que se aprovechan de los más indefensos.
That's the danger of vulnerability. When you encounter a person (or group) with bad intentions who notices this, they'll find it easy to trick you into believing they want to help you, when in reality they're just taking advantage of you. This doesn't mean Dani is stupid or naive, but rather that she was so emotionally affected that she simply wasn't in a position to be more careful. In a vulnerable state, you'll hardly make decisions based on logic, because feelings can be so overwhelming that they end up clouding your judgment.
This is demonstrated in the film with the people in the community, who are more of a cult than following traditions. It's a cliché, but it's actually the methodology these people use to "entice" easily manipulated people to do what they want, convincing them it's actually for their own benefit and that they only want to help. Although it's been portrayed in countless stories, this still happens quite frequently, both with cults and with people looking for victims to subjugate. In one way or another, there are always people who take advantage of the most defenseless ones.
No puedo negar que la historia es predecible. No hay plot twists muy innovadores y puedes entender qué va a ocurrir al final bastante rápido. Aparte el ritmo es muy lento, así que quizás por estos aspectos la película no es perfecta, puesto que pudo tener un guión más ingenioso o al menos ser más corta para que no se volviera tediosa.
Aunque debo destacar la fotografía que es sencillamente preciosa y que sí rompe con el esquema usual de las películas de terror oscuras y que se desarrollan normalmente de noche. En esta historia el horror está a plena luz del día, rodeado de sol y colores vibrantes que deberían generar una sensación agradable pero que bajo la perspectiva de esta película, hacen todo más inquietante. El contraste entre lo que vemos con lo que realmente ocurre te deja esa sensación desagradable de que algo no está bien.
I can't deny that the story is predictable. There aren't any very innovative plot twists, and you can figure out what's going to happen at the end fairly quickly. The pace is also very slow, so perhaps for these reasons the film isn't perfect, as it could have had a more inventive script or at least been shorter so it wouldn't become tedious.
Although I must highlight the photography, which is simply beautiful and does break with the usual pattern of dark horror films that usually take place at night. In this story, the horror is set in broad daylight, surrounded by sunlight and vibrant colors that should generate a pleasant feeling, but from the perspective of this film, it makes everything more disturbing. The contrast between what we see and what actually happens leaves you with that unpleasant or uncanny feeling that something isn't right.
Las actuaciones también son muy buenas, sobretodo la de Florence Pugh, lo cual junto a la fotografía y el mensaje implícito sobre la vulnerabilidad, el apoyo emocional y el trauma es lo que verdaderamente se puede destacar como puntos fuertes de la película. Sin embargo, sigo insistiendo que a nivel de narración realmente sí pudo ser mucho mejor, mejorando el guión evitando el uso excesivo de clichés y resumiendo un poco la historia.
Otro punto que debo destacar es que muchas personas, quiero creer que inocentemente, pensaron que esto es en realidad lo que ocurre en las celebraciones del Midsommar. Pues hay que decir que evidentemente no; el festival del verano no fue más que una inspiración quizás para generar ese contraste entre lo festivo y lo que realmente ocurre. Así que no creo que sea un problema de «mala representación cultural», sino de ingenuidad e ignorancia. Aunque se toman ciertos elementos de las tradiciones reales, estos son muy exagerados para generar impacto. Basta con una búsqueda rápida en internet para saber que no es así. Simplemente se usa como modo de llamar la atención del espectador.
The performances are also very good, especially Florence Pugh's. Along with the cinematography and the implicit message about vulnerability, emotional support, and trauma, these are the film's true strengths. However, I still insist that the narrative could have been much better, improving the script by avoiding the excessive use of clichés and summarizing the story a bit.
Another point I must highlight is that many people, I hope innocently, thought this is actually what happens during the Midsommar celebrations. Well, it must be said that this is clearly not the case; the midsummer festival was perhaps merely an inspiration to create this contrast between the festivities and what actually happens. So I don't think it's a problem of "cultural misrepresentation," but rather of naivety and ignorance. Although certain elements are taken from real traditions, they are too exaggerated to create an impact. A quick internet search is enough to tell you that this isn't the case. It's simply used as a way to grab the viewer's attention.
Entonces, ¿es esta una buena película? Yo diría que sí, aunque al tener sus defectos no podría decir que es una de las mejores. Pero sigue siendo entretenida y marca un elemento innovador e interesante de contraste que puede ser utilizado en otros proyectos y así crear algo bueno. Así que si esperas asustarte, ver algo rápido y ligero, esta no es una película para ti. Pero si quieres algo con un mensaje psicológico interesante, con drama y que genera cierto impacto, es una opción bastante buena. Eso sí, no es para todo público.
So, is this a good film? I'd say so, although, given its flaws, I can't say it's one of the best out there. But it's still entertaining and provides an innovative and interesting contrast that can be used in other projects to create something good. So, if you're expecting a scary, quick, and lighthearted view, this isn't the film for you. But if you want something with an interesting psychological message, drama, and a certain impact, it's a pretty good option. Of course, it's not for everyone.
