Private Citizen brings Criminal Charges Against Meta over Crypto Scam

Private citizen’s bringing criminal chargers against a corporation aren’t unheard of but they are extremely rare, it’s probably a big reason why corporations get away with so many things. The reason for this is that the average joe blow does not have the financial capacity to take on a big multinational corporation and win. Even if the corporation did engage in criminal activity and a lot of this has to do with finances.

Even if criminal activity was undertaken and you could prove it, the amount of money it would cost to bring a corporation to justice would be astronomical as their lawyers would utilise every trick in the book to slow things down, add barriers and assemble quite a large legal team.
After all, much of it while it would be an expense by the corporation it would also account as a tax write off or even an insurance claim where the corporation could trigger their public indemnity insurance and the insurance company would represent the corporation.

The world today is not stacked in favour of the common man, those days are long gone.

Crypto Scam and Meta

It just so happens to be that a current case is underway and it is quite the interesting one to watch and it relates to one of the Crypto Currency click bait articles that were circulating on the platform a few years ago. They often featured the face of a wealthy business person or actor and often spoke about how they made millions in crypto. This specific incident occurred in 2019 and involved one of Australia’s richest people, Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest

He has decided he has had enough and will be taking action against Meta the owner of facebook and is brining chargers against the company in two places, Western Australia and in California. This move alone is quite expensive and as you can see, it’s not the realm of mere mortals.
Twiggy is arguing that the corporation was negligent as it allowed bogus advertisement’s featuring his image to remain on the platform despite him complaining to Facebook.

It is also being alleged that the ads that were circulating were crypto scam’s and that as a result of Facebook not taking action and being paid to run those ads, the company dealt with proceeds of crime.

This is where it get’s interesting

So as you can see the case is already heating up and a lot of money is being burned with Twiggy launching two cases and one is an international case which ads not only cost but the rarity of this type of legal challenge. But money is no object for Twiggy as he has made Billions over the years this gives us a front row seat in what could be a defining historical moment.

Meta hasn’t denied nor confirmed the crime they are seeking more evidence from Twiggy’s team with Twiggy already handing over 19 folders of emails and correspondence but the lawyers are seeking more documents stating they can’t be sure all the documents were handed over.

This in itself is a process to draw out costs and would normally kill the average joe blow, the amount of work lawyers would need to do and charge for would send the commoner broke. Instead Twiggy is pursuing the criminal chargers despite refuting the latest request to provide more documents.

Watch and See

It’s definitely a watch and see event and given that it involved Crypto currency no doubt there will be further delays and costs as people refer it to the financial regulators of each nation and it will be interesting to see if findings in Western Australia or California are the same or if they compliment each other.

While Private Citizens battling corporations out in court are rare due to their costs, Twiggy seems focused to get the outcome he wants. But that chances are that Meta lawyers will draw out the process and cause cost inflation which may even if it hasn’t already, far outweigh the benefit if any, there is in taking the corporation to court.
In the meantime, we will need to wait on a judge ruling if they accept the sharing of further documents or not.
