Nature is incredible, perfect, and does things in its own time, using its own methods and rewarding those who are attentive.
Yesterday, while I was in my backyard, I heard a noise, a rustling in the branches of a tree that is full of butterfly caterpillars enjoying the leaves. It was a hawk.
At that moment, I thought, “How cruel! It's eating all the future butterflies!” My instinct was to scare it away, but then I remembered that nature rewards those who are attentive, and I left that attentive hawk to its feast. It is the natural order of things, and to interfere would be to upset the balance.
Natural selection. Well before that happened, one of the dozens of caterpillars ended up stopping very close to where I usually sit every morning. While I was having my daily coffee, it was there, preparing for a new phase, transforming itself and keeping me company.

Ontem, enquanto estava no quintal da minha casa, escutei um barulho, um farfalhar nos galhos de uma árvore que está repleta de lagartas de borboleta saboreando as folhas. Era um gavião.
No mesmo instante, pensei: "Que crueldade! Está comendo todas as futuras borboletas!" Meu instinto foi espantá-lo para longe, mas então me lembrei de que a natureza presenteia os atentos e deixei aquele atento gavião com seu banquete. É a ordem natural das coisas, e interferir seria atrapalhar o equilíbrio.
A seleção natural. Bem antes disso acontecer, uma das dezenas de lagartas acabou parando bem perto de onde costumo me sentar todas as manhãs. Enquanto eu tomava meu café diariamente, ela estava ali, se preparando para uma nova fase se transformando e me fazendo companhia.
