The first time I saw a washing machine, I knew life had been made easier instead of sitting or bending to wash piles of clothes, which could make us drained at the end of the day, plus other activities we tend to do in the house.
The use of electric blenders has replaced the local grinder we used then, even though some still think that grinding pepper with your hand on the local grinder is sweeter than blending with ease when there is light. I wouldn’t disagree, too because when I was in school, I preferred using my hands to grind my pepper.
Technology is something we are grateful for today because life is made easier with it, but at the same time, it calls for us to balance things and not rely too much on it. One thing we need to understand is that humans are irreplaceable, no matter what.
The saying that AI will take lots of jobs from people isn’t actually true to me because, at the end of the day, it requires human touch to perfect things, making them better. These machines do not have emotions and feelings like we do, they are only programmed machines that only follow a set of rules and instructions.
Now, let’s talk about robots. The first time I saw robots serving in a restaurant, replacing human staff, I saw the transformation of the world and how things would be easier and more effective because one of the usefulness is to reduce the workload on humans, allowing them to rest while these machines take over or replacing them completely. Why? Because machines don’t rest until you switch them off from running for too long, so they don’t start malfunctioning or developing faults early on.
My sister has been with me and has relieved me of the chores in the house. She would be the one to cook, wash the dishes and clothes, sweep the house and also fill up the drums and buckets with water, leaving me to do nothing other than lie down in bed or sit straight up in a chair while doing other things on my phone or reading novels and most of the times, sleep when I'm bored.
Though this is something that helps me do other things while she helps to reduce the workload on me, it only will bounce back on me when she’s gone, making me lazy and start missing her. She went to visit our uncle on Saturday and came back the next day. To tell you, I missed her. I wished she was around to cook for me. I dragged myself to the kitchen to mix things up and slept for the night.
This is something robots will make one become if we have to rely on it to perform every chore in the house, including taking care of kids. Like really? Taking care of kids, too? Where are we going to?
I understand robots would make life easier for us. Having machines to do everything would be relieving. However, it calls for us not to fully rely on it and besides, these are machines with no emotions or feelings. Even though my sister has been the one cooking, I still do the stew/soup myself because I feel I won’t be satisfied if she does it. Though it’s not like limiting her ability to, I just love to make my stew while she does the rest.
I definitely wouldn’t let a robot cook my meals. Though there are positive sides to it, like adhering to strict hygiene standards, avoiding food wastage, and reducing the cooking time of people, at the same time, the downsides to it are they won't allow humans to improve their culinary skills. Food prepared by a robot might be less appealing and less flavorful. The ability to improve my cooking skills is something I wouldn't want to waste away just like that, all because I needed to relieve myself.
It also calls for me to take charge even if the robot would do other things like cleaning, washing and sweeping the house but when it comes to taking care of my kids? Nah! That’s like going over the limit and not properly monitoring my kids but to be placed in charge of a machine that doesn’t understand feelings or even pay attention to their needs.
Though it’s a good thing to own a robot to relieve you in certain situations, it’s not something I would want to rely on completely, making me lazy or inefficient. Everything comes down to balance.
I consider these chores as a way of exercising, like walking around the house, bending, and letting my hands and feet in motion and not static, which are very important to keep your body in shape and fit.
Robots are good, and I don’t mind getting one if it's affordable to help me perform activities effectively and efficiently, but I do not want to stay idle, either. I love moving my body, and just sitting or lying down in one spot could have an effect on the body.
