A trend surfaced in Nigerian twitter yesterday where people were giving their experiences encountering old money and how influential they are with their old money status. No matter how rich you are with your new money, you are still going to feel pretty intimidated when surrounded by old money. Old money is the type of money that has been passed down from generation to generation, making being wealthy a lifestyle through out the generation. Kids from old money are easy to network with each other and keep the wealth circulating. It’s easy for them to start a high value investment, investment access that cost a person who isn’t from old money millions of dollars to obtain, but with old money, their connection and access get them that for free. Wealth that need some certain permissions to obtain, old money kids get access to them easily because of their connection. They will always want to give such opportunity amongst themselves because they want the wealth to keep circulating around them to keep the old money status constant.
Well, you can’t blame them, it’s human nature if you were in their shoes you would do the same. Over time the world has changed and new money has come up to create their own old money over time, today the internet has made it easier to create wealth and create your own new money. One thing about money is the demand and supply principle, if people are always demanding for your service and you are able to sustain that, wealth is your end point. The internet is helping a lot of people reach out to a lot of other people that end up demanding for their services, this is seen done through media and coding. A lot of people are making money through music and a lot of people who have made money through music got discovered in the internet. Let’s take for instance, Justin Bieber, he was discovered on YouTube where he was signed and he became a superstar. Justin Bieber didn’t grow up in old money, his family was not wealthy, so the chances of him being discovered by a record label and getting signed was extremely slim. He need to get some certain permission that would have caused him money, but thanks to the permissionless internet, he got discovered, got signed became a superstar and created wealth for himself and family.
Same thing is seen happening in the coding and tech space. Lots of people have created wealth from tech by coding and providing a service that solves a problem. Look at Mark Zuckerberg and how he created wealth by creating a social media platform called Facebook. Look at Jack Dorsey that created wealth by creating a social media platform called twitter. These are just the top people they are people whose names are not as popular as the mentioned names above that have created wealth from coding, a skill that doesn’t need permission. As long as they solve problems and people are happy they are good to go in their wealth creation journey.
