The episode ends up with that face to face scene on the porch from New Year's Eve, all this was so fresh because it happens right before Joel dies so just imagine how much this increase how Ellie felt the day Abby killed Joel, but this is where Ellie finally gets Joel to admit the truth about killing all the fireflies and Marlene to save her. The whole conversation is a though one because you can see how much Joel loves Ellie but also how selfish his love is, he admits that making a cure would have killed her and that he would do it all over again because he can't bear to lose another daughter, men if you have kids you know what he means. Ellie tells him that dying to make a cure was supposed to be her purpose but that's all bull sht because she doesn't know what is to have and love your kids, she is just been as selfish as Joel trying to be the star of the show making her life have a purpose, if Im not mistaken there were not guarantees they could make they cure but still both sides are as selfish when it comes to end someones life even if its your own. The fact that this conversation happens the night before Joel dies makes it even more tragic because Ellie says she doesn't think she can forgive him but she wants to try and then the next day he is gone forever and she never gets the chance to work through those feelings, see how both sides can be selfish, we don't create life with our hands so we are not suppose to take someones else. This episode definitely confirms why Ellie was so broken up about Joel's death, not just because she loved him but because when the moment came for her to make things better between them then life itself took it from her.
