We are dog sitting for a few days on short notice, as the owners had something come up. However, it is a little bit different this time, as there were things "on the schedule" for the dog and it has to go to the vet a couple times so they can watch it get a worming pill. Yep. Multiple vet trips so they can prove it has taken a pill. This dog is in shows and travels overseas, so has to have an up-to-date passport.
But the other (more fun) thing was that it was booked into an event to try track running, like greyhounds and whippets do - except it was only for dachshunds. And for those who know what dachshunds are like can imagine, chaos ensued, and many laughs were had. The ones above were even dressed in their racing suits for the occasion.
We are on the list to get our own dog and hopefully it will come this year, but it is never really certain and there are some potential wrinkles in the plan. We are on "a list" at the same kennel our loan dog is from, but our loan dog might also be having puppies of its own, which would be awesome to have, as he is a great personality and the chances are they will be somewhat similar.
"Personality" - Can dogs have it?
Of course!!
Dachshunds are hunting dogs by nature - well, maybe by nurture - because most of the dogs didn't give much of a chase. And "Paavo" who is a tiny little thing, first hunted down the prize being pulled on a string and then graduated with the handful of other dogs (out of about 40) that were able to pay attention had a chance to chase the proper hare around half the track. Despite his diminutive size and shorter than even dachshund normal legs, he gave it his best go.
And then, was spent.
A couple runs like that and he was ready to curl up and get to sleep.
I took my camera with a couple longer lenses, but unfortunately, one of them is pretty crappy (100-300 mm) and were not crisp enough to even bother with, so I changed to the smaller (40-150mm). I am not great with either at speed, especially with lower light, but they came out okay considering the conditions, and my skill.
All in all, it was a pretty good "event" and my wife was thrilled to be surrounded by so many dachshunds of varying types. I was even pretty happy to pat them and I am looking forward to having one of our own at home too. I have even planned to build a few "access ramps" so he can get up onto the couch to stare from the window.
Perhaps I will be a crazy dog person.
There was a few of them there today.
