Happy Cinco De Mayo! What a fun holiday! Too bad it falls on Monday this year, there may be a lot of hangovers at the workplace tomorrow... lol
To start the fun off, first off I have a quick giveaway of one HSBI unit for the first person who answers my question correctly. The celebration of Cinco De Mayo is celebrating Mexican independence from what other nation? Good luck!
I have always loved collecting Mexican silver coins. They have always had such beautiful designs and years back when I started collecting they were all pretty inexpensive. Of course silver was cheaper back then, but demand for the coins was lower as well. Today I want to share some silver I've been trying to buy for some time now. No, this one isn't mine, but I'm still trying to find one for a good price. This is a true beauty, and since I don't own one this picture came from eBay.
About the round
From numista.com
This Mexican Libertad is a reverse proof silver round. In a proof usually the background (known as the field) is shiny like a mirror, in a reverse proof it's the opposite. The background is frosty and the images shiny. Isn't that a pretty work of art? The numista.com doesn't have the reverse proof in their info, so that was for the regular Libertad.
It's one Troy ounce of pure silver, and this isn't technically a coin. It doesn't state a value on the silver, and to be a coin a value must be stated. These are silver bullion rounds rather than coins, but they are beautiful. And your next question will be why haven't you bought one yet. They run around $300 to $400 each... Not exactly inexpensive!
I will pick one up someday when the price is right...
There was a time that I used to travel to Mexico frequently, but I haven't been in years now. It was always so much fun with so much entertainment, water sports, and great food! The main reason I stopped visiting was the cartel violence and Americans have been targeted at times. When I was still in the Army reserve, it was placed on the list of places we weren't allowed to travel. The US Armed Forces has a list of countries and regions that service members aren't allowed to go even as a reservist.
I am hopeful the violence will be resolved soon, I would love to be able to head down to Mexico again in the near future!
And now to share a little music from Mexico. It's not the traditional mariachi music, but a pop star named Thalía. She's a well know singer/actress/business mogul from Mexico. This song is fitting because incorporates some Mexican culture right into the song. This is: "Amor a la Mexicana" (Mexican Style Love):
That will finish off my Cinco De Mayo post for this year. I hope you all enjoyed it, I enjoyed putting it together! Please feel free to leave any comments, contest answers, or questions below. Thank you everyone for all of your support, I deeply appreciate it! Have a great week and Cinco De Mayo!
