I love a biographical story
Often I don't realize a movie or tv show is based on true events until the end when they suddenly show more information or real life pictures or video. It does often add to the charm of the movie, especially if the movie already touched you in a way, such as Nonnas did some days ago.
This weekend we were browsing Netflix for something to watch and I knew there were a few new releases so we may be lucky to find something we both wanted to watch. The endless Spanish tv shows or movies are often not something my boyfriend wants to watch so I seperate these for when I watch Netflix by myself. Luckily I saw the trailer of Nonnas appear and I knew this could be a good one.
Let's start with thet trailer in case you haven't seen it yet.
Feelgood drama
I don't like spoiling too much of a movie or tv show so I'm going to try and keep it a bit vague while still hoping you'll check it out if you love a feelgood movie.
Joe's mother dies and leaves an inheritance, his two best friends (a couple) are trying to convince him to enjoy life with it as they feel this is what his mother would have wanted. When Joe decides to open a restaurant from the money, his best friend is not very supportive at first, but soon turns around to help him out where he can.
He actually goes above and beyond, without Joe knowing this. A true friendship, I'd say. The reason Joe opens a restaurant is because he used to love seeing his "Nonna" which is grandmother and mother cook and he wanted to honour the family recipes while giving guests in the restaurant a feeling of family and feeling at home.
This whole storyline alone is something I personally love but the story goes further, he wants the food to be cooked by true other "Nonnas" who implement their own family recipes from their own region.
Nonnas
The nonnas are some characters and I think I don't say too much when I mention not all goes smooth between them. Joe definitely picked some different types of ladies who have to learn to work together.
Moved me to tears
The movie got me and my boyfriend sucked in fully and moved both of us to tears, sometimes you just need to watch a feelgood movie as this one and yeah it's possible we were also moved by tears a bit because of the lack of our own nonnas and family around. Either way, this was one of these great watches that I'd recommend to everyone!
Universe alligning
Fun fact is that the very next day (I already wrote about it in my previous post), we went to the city and ended up in such a family owned restaurant where we had the best Moroccan food which truly made me feel at home and reminded me of this exact feeling this movie had given me earlier.
Family recipes shouldn't go to waste and I'm sad that I have none of these recipes from my grandparents. A year ago or so I decided to bundle my own succesfull recipes loved by my daughter so that later she at least has something like that to think about and maybe copy them or even improve them.
My daughter is a difficult eater but is my biggest support when she loves one of my pastas or baked items, I think she deserves to at least have the recipes, even though they are probably not special enough to top these recipes from Nonnas.. In the end, it's more about the memories being kept alive.
If you watched the movie, let me know what you thought about it, if you are going to watch it, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
