There is a dark joke among dorama or J-Movie lovers, which is ‘Just guess who will die?’ This question is often asked because so many storylines end with the death of one of the characters. And as a lover of Japanese entertainment, this is indeed true. Many romantic or thriller stories end with the death of one of the characters. This is also the case with one of the films I will review below.

366 NICHI

After his mother passed away from a severe illness, Minato Makiya (Eiji Akaso) was reluctant to return to school. He felt his world had crumbled instantly. He had no motivation left to continue living, including going to school.

Then Miu Tamashiro (Moka Kamishiraishi) appeared, finding Minato on the beach listening to music. Miu also shared the same hobby as Minato, recording their favourite songs into a collage. From this brief encounter, the two eventually connect through music. Minato, who had lost his passion for life, finally finds the courage to rise again and pursue his dreams in the field of music, thanks to Miu's presence and encouragement. Not only that, the two eventually develop a romantic relationship and together head to Tokyo to pursue their dreams.

On the other hand, there is Ryusei Kayoda (Yuto Nakajima), who has been friends with Miu since childhood and also has feelings for her. During the toughest times in Miu's life, Ryusei was always there to protect her from getting hurt and crying.

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Minato Makiya

Optimistic about his dreams but has a heart that is easily moved, especially when it comes to his mother. However, because of this, he is also a man who deeply loves his beloved, Miu. Throughout their romantic relationship, Minato never wanted to hurt Miu, until something happened that made him take the bold step of leaving Miu, even though he loved her.

  • Miu Tamashiro

Cheerful, optimistic, and beautiful. She also loves music and enjoys supporting others, such as Minato and Ryusei, her best friend. She is sincere when she loves someone, like her love for Minato.

  • Ryusei Kayoda

He is the second lead who gets a fair share of the story and screen time, in my opinion. Despite the various controversies brought by Miu from Tokyo, Ryusei is the one who successfully wins her love. Ryusei is a loving and responsible person. I personally really like Ryusei's character in this movie. He is very gentlemanly.

SUMMARY

Maintaining love, taking risks for dreams, and being entangled in unexpected trials are a series of tragedies that anyone can relate to. One of them is in the film 366 Days. There are many things we can take away from this film, including the importance of open communication to avoid hurting those we still care about, and so on.

That’s the gist of it if you’re looking for a romantic film that tugs at the heartstrings, 366 is the answer you’re seeking. Enjoy the film!
