Prelude
Hi all, good day to all of you. It's time again for Community Engagement Challenge. Today's challenge topic is to write a guide on building up of collection for new players. Some new players might prefer to rent sufficiently daily to battle, but there are possibilities that some cards might not be always available for rental. So in order to have some stability, I personally think certain cards need to be owned and continuously built up.
Get What Cards First?
For a start, it will always be the summoners since they dictate what lineup you will use and also how high level cards you can bring to the battlefield. So definitely, key is to work on summoners.
I will share more on what is available now on modern so that it is more relevant for new players and what summoners to snap up to build up card collection.
Chaos Legion
One set that dominated the meta for the longest of time, at least for me. Loads of sweet victories and amazing battles using them. And up till today, most of the matches will be spearheaded by these summoners. Based on what I understood thus far, Chaos Legion will stay in modern at least until April.
This bring about an awkward situation whether or not one should be continue building into Chaos Legion summoners. Build now but face the situation of them phasing out when the new set arrives. But if do not build now, need to endure lower level deck till the new set comes.
With such a situation, my take is to rent instead of purchase for now. And if you really want to purchase, watch out for price dips and buy them on a low by monitoring the market and build to the summoners to a level that you think enough for you to handle one league above your current league. So example if you are comfortably battling in Bronze, purchase sufficiently to handle matches in Silver 3. But if you are ok with battling in Wild League, these summoners are all amazing cards to pick up, especially the legendary ones such as Possibilus and Immortalis.
There are also quite a number of summoners from the Riftwatchers series which is also considered under the Chaos Legion set and will rotated out with Chaos Legion. While a few of them are amazing, they also fall into the awkward situation if one chose to stick with modern. Most of them are utility summoners so situation is still as bad as those Chaos Legion ones be it core set or soulbound which many of us are so used to.
I personally feel be it the rare or legendary summoners from Chaos Legion set are all really great cards to buy in if you are considering playing some Wild at times. I might getting some of the rare summoners to move up my level 1/2 summoners to at least a good level 3 to enable the use of some cards if the price is right such as Tarsa and Obsidian.
Rebellion
Now we move on to the Rebellion set which become much more instrumental if we are to be continuing our battles in Modern since it will not be rotated out for the time being.
First up is the common dual splinter summoners. Pricing wise, they are the cheapest to build and they only ask for 3 mana to use them. A very versatile summoner to build up if you love to capitalize the benefit of playing both colours. I am expecting the meta to swing a little towards these summoners but not fully as there are better options in Rebellion which I believe can really make a difference during game play. The battle tactics summoners with rare and legendary rarities.
These battle tactics summoners are the important ones that need to be built up. However, these do not come cheap. For rare ones, they come at a rate of 20 cents for the cheapest ones and 85 cents for the higher ones, while for the legendary summoners come with the cheapest going at about 12 USD and the highest going at 65 USD.
If your budget is getting in your way, can start by looking into the building up of the rare summoners and get them to a one level above your comfortable playing league and it will kickstart the foundation of your deck building. For a start, I would be building my own to level 3 if possible for the rare ones. For the legendary ones, might need to take a little longer to save up and get them. But I do recognize how scary the legendary battle tactics summoners as I do meet them on the battlefield.
Wrap Up
Chaos Legion at this moment faces an awkward moment to be included in collection building if one is looking to build collection ready for modern. Focus should be in Rebellion to build up the battle tactics summoners and take advantage of the tactics selection portion to bring advantage t your lineup. At this moment in time, I am not sure on what summoners will be released in the new set. If you think Rebellion battle tactics summoners maybe not to your liking, you could also save up a little and prepare to buy in for the new set. And while you are preparing for the arrival of the new set, keep battling and earn as much Glint as you can to build up your soul bound reward cards to higher levels as you build your summoner levels.
