Despite the guest's connection to Austria being evident at today's jazz matinee, the focus is neither on Salzburg nor Vienna, even though these cities are renowned as centres of musical genius in the Alpine republic, but exclusively on a modestly sized town in Lower Austria. We are talking about Melk, where Thomas Gansch was born in 1975 as the youngest offspring of a family of musicians. The father was known as a composer and bandmaster (brass music) and the brother was professor of trumpet at the Mozarteum in Salzburg until 2014.
Obwohl mit dem Gast zur heutigen Jazz-Matinee der Bezug zu Österreich unverkennbar ist, richtet sich der Fokus weder auf Salzburg noch auf Wien, auch wenn jene als Metropolen für musikalischen Genialität der Alpenrepublik geltend, sondern ausschließlich auf eine Stadt von überschaubarer Größe in Niederösterreich. Die Rede ist vom Melk, wo Thomas Gansch 1975 als jüngster Sproß in eine Musikerfamilie hineingeboren wurde. Der Vater war bekannt als Komponist und Kapellmeister (Blasmusik) und der Bruder bis 2014 Professor für Trompete am Salzburger Mozarteum.
Thirty-five years ago, Thomas Gansch began his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. It was during this time that he founded the brass ensemble Monzil Brass, for which he made a name for himself internationally as musical director and presenter. In 1999, Swiss jazz pianist Mathias Rüegg (who works in Austria) invited Gansch to join his Vienna Art Orchestra. Soon after, he formed the band Gansch & Roses, with which he is a regular guest on stage at the Viennese jazz club Porky & Bess and at Jazzland Vienna.
Bereits mit 15 Jahren begann Thomas Gansch sein Studium an der Musikhochschule in Wien. Während dieser Zeit gründete er das Blasmusik-Ensemble Monzil Brass, für das er sich als musikalischer Leiter und Moderator international einen Namen machte. Der Schweizer Jazz-Pianist (mit Arbeitsumfeld in Österreich) Mathias Rüegg berief 1999 Gansch in sein Vienna Art Orchestra. Quasi im Gleichklang erschuf er die Band Gansch & Roses, mit der er steter Gast auf der Bühne des Wiener Jazzlokals Porky & Bess und im Wiener Jazzland.
As Thomas Gansch has never wanted to commit himself to one musical direction, he initiated the Alpen & Glühen band project in order to (in his own words) combine the various musical roots and socialisations with outstanding musicians to create an aesthetic body of sound. Folk music meets jazz, filigree music-making meets rousing improvisation. Manu Delago, Lukas Kranzelbinder, Christian Bakanic, Bernie Mallinger, Sophie Abraham and the Radio String Quartet will be performing.
Da Thomas Gansch sich noch nie auf eine musikalische Ausrichtung hat festlegen wollen und lassen, initiierte er das Bandprojekt Alpen & Glühen, um (nach eigener Aussage) mit herausragenden Musikern die verschiedenen musikalischen Wurzeln und Sozialisierungen zu einem ästhetischen Klangkörper zu bündeln. Volksmusik trifft auf Jazz, filigranes Musizieren auf mitreißende Improvisationen. Mit von der Partie sind Manu Delago, Lukas Kranzelbinder Christian Bakanic, Bernie Mallinger, Sophie Abraham und das Radio String Quartett.
In order not to give the feeling of boredom a chance, Thomas Gansch answers the call of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra and performs what the critics judge as follows: Music full of sonic opulence, sophisticated arrangements and numerous superb solos, in which Thomas Gansch repeatedly comes to the fore and delights with his unmistakable tone and brilliant playing style. The trumpeter does not remain alone in the limelight, but maintains an impressively democratic attitude: he inspires the other members of the orchestra to create their own moments of solo brilliance and free improvisation.
Um auf keinen Fall dem Gefühl der Langeweile eine Chance zu gewähren, folgt Thomas Gansch dem Ruf des Zurich Jazz Orchestras und gibt das wieder, was von der Kritik wie folgt beurteilt wird: Eine Musik voller klanglicher Opulenz, raffinierter Arrangements und zahlreicher großartiger Soli, in denen Thomas Gansch immer wieder in den Vordergrund tritt und mit seinem unverwechselbaren Ton und seiner brillanten Spielweise begeistert. Dabei bleibt der Trompeter nicht im Rampenlicht allein, sondern bewahrt eine beeindruckende demokratische Haltung: Er inspiriert die anderen Mitglieder des Orchesters zu eigenen solistischen Glanzmomenten und freier Improvisation.
The inspiring works with Joschie Schneeberger and Malcom Braff should not be overlooked. Edi Köhldorfer and the Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich also enjoyed working together. Unfortunately, only a small part of the gigantic potential of this incredibly creative musician comes to the fore on the jazz matinée stage. It is therefore definitely worth keeping an eye out for dates to experience Thomas Gansch live with his trumpet and other top-class artists.
Dabei sollten nicht die inspirierenden Arbeiten mit Joschie Schneeberger oder Malcom Braff unterschlagen werden. Auch Edi Köhldorfer und das Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich erfreuten sich der Zusammenarbeit. Beim Auftritt auf der Jazz-Matinee-Bühne kommt leider nur ein kleiner Teil des riesigen Potenzial dieses unfassbar kreativen Musikers zur Geltung. Es lohnt sich daher unbedingt nach Terminen Ausschau zu halten, Thomas Gansch live mit seiner Trompete und anderen hochrangigen Künstlern zu erleben.
