A few months ago, we saw the film THE SUBSTANCE, where the protagonist Elisabeth, in order to achieve her goal of staying in the entertainment industry and not being rejected, becomes obsessed with youth and physical perfection, turning to the Substance. We saw the consequences through a horror-gore-body horror narrative, which, by the way, I still haven't gotten over.

Now, Norwegian cinema has given us a gem called THE UGLY STEPSISTER, which is based on the story of CINDERELLA but from the perspective of Elvira, one of the stepsisters, who, in order to achieve her goal of being chosen by the Prince for marriage, undergoes several extreme and quite grotesque processes. It takes place in a more or less medieval era, if we look at the costumes, architecture, the science at their disposal, etc., and has a somewhat dark atmosphere.

Hace unos meses vimos la película LA SUSTANCIA, donde la protagonista Elisabeth por alcanzar su objetivo de mantenerse en la industria del entretenimiento y no ser rechazada, se obsesiona con la juventud y la perfección física, recurriendo a la Sustancia y vimos las consecuencias a través de una narración de Terror-Gore-Body Horror, que por cierto aún no supero.

Ahora el cine noruego nos ha regalado una joya llamada LA HERMANASTRA FEA que es sobre el cuento de LA CENICIENTA pero desde la perspectiva de Elvira, una de las hermanastras, quien por alcanzar su objetivo de ser elegida para matrimonio por el Príncipe, se someterá a varios procesos extremos y bastantes grotescos. En una época más o menos medieval, si nos fijamos en en el vestuario, arquitectura, la ciencia de la que disponían, etc y con una atmósfera algo oscura.

This film is a dark and twisted version, primarily inspired by the Brothers Grimm version, whom I greatly admire and whom I know not only from Cinderella, but also from Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, and Little Red Riding Hood; although they have many others. And although the events are completely unrealistic, I think THE UGLY STEPSISTER leaves a more realistic and raw message than its Disney version. Like THE SUBSTANCE, it has a profound message, which will not be delivered through a moral that leaves us feeling highly positive after watching it, but rather by making us feel sometimes identified, sometimes disgusted, sometimes empathic with the villain. It will be our responsibility to analyze each aspect and reflect on our position.

Now I invite you to watch this fascinating trailer, the only thing I would like to criticize is that it gives us too much information.

Esta película es una versión oscura y retorcida, inspirada principalmente en la versión de los Hermanos Grimm, a quienes admiro muchísimo y que conozco no solo por Cenicienta, sino también de Hansel y Gretel, Blancanieves y Caperucita Roja; aunque tienen muchos otros. Y aunque los acontecimientos son absolutamente irreales, creo que LA HERMANASTRA FEA deja un mensaje más realista y crudo, que su versión Disney; que al igual que LA SUSTANCIA tiene un mensaje profundo, que no será entregado a través de una MORALEJA que nos deje altamente positivos al terminar de verla, sino por lograr hacernos sentir a veces identificados, a veces asqueados, a veces por empatizar con el villano, y que será nuestra responsabilidad analizar cada aspecto y reflexionar sobre nuestra postura.

Ahora los invito a ver este fascinante el Tráiler, al que solo le quisiera criticar que nos entregó demasiada información en él.

Today I want to make this post a little different from my usual ones, as I want to leave a short list of the themes or issues in this film that left me thoughtful and reflective. I'm sure there are many more, but these are the ones I identified this first time I saw it, and I think I'll watch it again with my daughters.

1 - Dynamics of Some Toxic Families or Relatives:

In the film, Elvira's mother pressures her and forces her to meet beauty standards to achieve her goal of marrying the Prince and benefiting the family financially and socially. She even competes with Agnes, who didn't really treat her badly from the start.

And it is a real problem that is present in many families, who put maximum pressure on their children to achieve very high goals, sometimes in beauty, but also academically, such as when we only recognize our children if they manage to be on an honor roll, or in sports with Olympic goals or records, or if they are in certain circles of friends, etc. These dynamics are toxic and very aggressive for children.

Hoy quiero hacer este post algo diferente a los que realizo, ya que quiero dejar una pequeña lista de los temas o problemáticas de ésta película, y de los cuales me dejó pensativa y reflexiva; y estoy segura que hay muchos más, pero estos serían los que identifiqué esta primera vez que la vi y es que creo que la veré nuevamente con mis hijas.

1- Dinámica de algunas Familias o Familiares Tóxicos:

En la película con la Influencia de la mamá de Elvira, que la presiona y obliga alcanzar si o si los estándares de belleza para lograr el objetivo de casarse con el Príncipe y beneficiar económica y socialmente a la familia. Incluso, rivalizando con Agnes quien realmente no la trató mal desde el principio.

Y es que si es un problema real que está presente en muchas familias, que presionan al máximo a los hijos para que alcancen objetivos muy altos , a veces de belleza, pero también académicos como cuando solo reconocemos a nuestros hijos si logran estar en un cuadro de honor, o deportivos con metas olímpicas o récords, o que estén en ciertos círculos de amistades, etc. Estas dinámicas son tóxicas y muy agresivas para los hijos.

2- The value of superficial beauty:

Elvira's obsession with beauty and the methods she resorts to, some of which were imposed by her mother, but she also resorted to very aggressive methods on her own that were detrimental to her own health and integrity. This value or overvaluation of superficial beauty can also be interpreted as a critique of society, which often prioritizes external beauty over our abilities, inner beauty, or positive values.

3- Criticism of simplistic narratives in stories:

Those stories that present us with good or bad characters are very simplistic and do not promote the analysis of situations to solve problems as complex as we human beings are. In THE UGLY STEPSISTER we manage to empathize at times with Elvira, who would be the "villain of the story" as we have done in films like "Joker" or "Maleficent" or in series like "Breaking Bad", where we can analyze that sometimes the bad guy is not simply bad, but there are a lot of complex problems within him.

2- El valor de la belleza superficial:

La obsesión de Elvira por la belleza y los métodos a los que recurre, que algunos fueron impuestos por su mamá, pero ella por su cuenta también recurrió a métodos muy agresivos que jugaban en contra de su propia salud e integridad. Este valor o sobre valoración de la belleza superficial, puede interpretarse también como una crítica a la sociedad, que prioriza la belleza exterior muchas veces sobre nuestras capacidades, belleza interior o valores positivos.

3- Crítica a las narrativas simplistas de los cuentos:

Esos cuentos que nos presentan personajes buenos o personajes malos, es muy simplista y además no promueven el análisis de las situaciones para resolver problemas tan complejos como complejos somos los seres humanos. En LA HERMANASTRA FEA logramos empatizar por momentos con Elvira que sería la "villana del cuento" como lo hemos hecho en películas como el "Joker" o "Maléfica" o en series como "Breaking Bad", donde podemos analizar a veces el malo no es simplemente malo, sino que hay un montón de problemas complejos dentro de él.

Everything is beautifully set in the era in which it is set, given the aspects I mentioned, such as the architecture, costumes, and trailers. Everything has a dark tone given the narrative of the events, but with a beautiful color palette and great lighting.
The acting, although I can't recognize any of the actors or actresses because it's Norwegian cinema, with which I don't identify, was excellent, and each character was completely believable.
I liked the story overall, and I also highlight the ending... and what else could happen? It ended as it should have, and I really liked that.

Todo hermosamente ambientado a la época donde se ubica dado los aspectos que mencioné como la arquitectura, el vestuario y los avances. Todo con un tono oscuro dado la narrativa de los hechos, pero con una bella paleta de colores y mucha iluminación.
Las actuaciones, aunque no puedo reconocer a ningún actor o actriz por tratarse del cine noruego, con el cual no estoy identificada, pero las actuaciones fueron excelentes y cada personaje era totalmente creíble.
La historia en general me gustó, y también destaco el final... y es que ¿Qué más podía pasar? terminó como tenía que terminar, eso me gustó mucho.

Perhaps the exaggerated use of gore or body horror distracts us from the message or insights we can gain from this story, told from Elvira's perspective; it touches on real themes and issues within a fantastical tale.

But I think the intention of THE UGLY STEPSISTER was precisely to honor the horror genre it was set in, so I can't really say it was a wasted educational opportunity, because that wasn't its intention. So just enjoy it...

Tal vez la exageración de los recursos de Gore o Body Horror, nos alejan del mensaje o las reflexiones que nos puede dejar esta historia narrada desde la perspectiva de Elvira; que toca temas o problemáticas reales dentro de una historia fantástica.

Pero creo que la intensión de LA HERMANASTRA FEA era precisamente hacer honor al género de Terror donde se ubicó, así no puedo decir realmente que se desperdició una oportunidad educativa, porque su intensión no fue esa. Así que solo hay que disfrutarla...

I can happily RECOMMEND a horror film that I'm almost certain will please fans of good stories in this genre. I loved this film and I recommend it 100%.

Felizmente puedo RECOMENDAR una película de Terror con la que estoy casi segura podemos estar complacidos los amantes de las buenas historias de este género. Me encantó esta película y la Recomiendo al 100%.
