#news #newsonleo #elsalvador #politics Government of El Salvador has removed Monument to Reconciliation, large three-part statue built in 2017 for the 25th anniversary of peace accord that had ended brutal and bloody civil war between (then) right-wing government and left-wing guerilla movement of FMLN.
The move was publicly praised by president Nayib Bukele, a fierce critic of the treaty, who claims that the accord between two belligerents paved the way for the lawlessness and creation of powerful gangs that had plagued El Salvador until his presidency. He also criticised the Monument for its "poor aesthetic quality".
Government has announced that the monument, which had been built through donations collected by Catholic Church, will be replaced by "pedestrian route" that symbolises "new peace and new security that all Salvadoreans live".
