a frog
on the side of the house
my wife screams
through the crashing waves
calling me to attention
the call of a gull
swirling and churning
the air rumbles outside
how did we get here
sitting by a fire
watching the news
on the wall of our cave
high in the trees
shaking the branches
children laugh and shriek
cool and overcast
an egret flies overhead
in solitude
whether my mood
be foul or not
the warbler sings
deep inhale
before entering the office
the smell of spring rain
even here
on the restroom floor
a cherry petal
the waxing moon
halfway to full
she rubs her belly
one by one
they take their leave
on a gentle breeze
at the river’s edge
underneath a pale blue sky
pink pink and more pink
in the morning
I watch a thick fog rise
from the students’ eyes
full cherry bloom
dancing in the wind and rain
goodbyes come too soon
sitting quietly
the students learn to ignore
the call of the wild
head out the window
tongue dangling in the air
oh, to be a dog
in these old bones
a young man is wanting to
get up and dance
